Born on August 12, 1940, in Irwinton, GA – a man of deep roots, adventurous spirit, and boundless love for family, died peacefully at home in Wahneta, FL on November 20, 2025 at the age of 85.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Earline Smith, his cherished son Richard Smith, his “Dinah”- daughter Diane Hicks, his brother Dennis Tanner, and his parents Derek G. Smith and Mary Jane Colson.
Bill is survived by his devoted sister Gloria “Toots” Martin, and a proud brood of children: Rita Giametta (preceded in death by husband Mike), Darline Boone (Jerry), Tamara Smith Foster Penfield (Randy), Derek Smith (Joanne), Keith Smith, Kevin Smith (Jimmy), Will Greene (Honorary Son), and Robin Rogers (Chris). His legacy continues through 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, along with an absolute bevy of nieces and nephews who adored him.
Bill was a proud master electrician and a longtime member of both the American Legion and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He found joy in climbing silos and poles, walking the drag lines, and then unwinding with his buddies after a good day’s work. He always embraced the hard work and camaraderie that defined his career
Beyond his trade, Bill’s heart belonged to the outdoors. He loved airboat adventures, fishing, and frog-gigging, and he cultivated beauty at home by creating a natural oasis filled with his cherished orchids, along with a variety of other plants and flowers. His oasis yielded mangos and avocados, which he generously shared with family, friends, and neighbors. He was also a passionate collector of arrowheads and knives—treasures that reflected his curiosity and his appreciation for craftsmanship and history
In his playful tradition of giving friends and family “special names,” Bill offered more than nicknames—he bestowed tokens of affection that carried his warmth and humor into every relationship. These names became signatures of love, inscribed on gifts and cards, reminders that each bond was cherished and uniquely honored by him.
For Bill, Thanksgiving was more than a holiday—it was sacred. Each year he hosted a cherished luncheon, a feast of Boston butts, ribs, hearty sides, and at least a couple of deep fried turkeys. Around his table, stories flowed freely, laughter rang out, and bonds were strengthened. The memories born in that gathering continue to live on in the hearts of all who shared in his hospitality.
In honor of his life, family and friends are invited to gather at Bill’s home for a final Thanksgiving luncheon, where his spirit of generosity, joy, and storytelling will be remembered. In place of traditional flowers, the family would love to see orchids, a tribute to Bill’s passion for cultivating beauty and life.
