Augusta, GA—Mr. Emerson Lee Long, 88, entered into rest on Monday, November 19, 2018. Mr. Long was a very proud veteran of the United States Army. While serving in the military he received the Army of Occupational Medal, National Defense Service Medal with “Oak Leaf” and Bar, Good Conduct medal (8th award), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (4 campaigns) and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Leaf. Mr. Long was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Long was born in Severn, NC. Mr. Long was known to his family and friends as the Burgermeister in Burgoberbach. He never met a stranger and he showed his family how to love others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. Mr. Long is preceded in death by his previous wife, Walburga “Wally” Long; and his second wife, Alverta Long. Survivors include his children, James Long (Joni), Bill Long, Donna Crawford, Henry Long (Debbie), John Anderson (Cindy) and Bill Mellema (Joyce); brother, John Long; grandchildren, Ron Koch (Katie), Christina Manning (Rob), Kelly Mellema, Jennifer Wood, William Long, Daniel Long (Ashley), Billy Mellema (Becky), Richard Long (Amanda), Jonathan Long, James Long Jr. (Katie), Loren Halley (Gabriel), Dana Lloyd (Zeke), Daniel Anderson (Amanda), Dalton Long (Kayla), Noah Long, Austin Anderson and Rachel Anderson; and 22 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 4-6pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home on Lumpkin Road. Funeral services will follow at the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of Augusta.
