Gwendolyn Hatcher Herring, 86, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 22, 2019. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James Herring; her parents, Edgar Lafate and Mary Louise Hatcher; her sisters; Leta Plaskon and twin sister Jacqueline Harrison. Survivors include four sons: Leslie Herring (Fran) of Marbury AL, Kinneth Herring (Terry) of Windsor, SC, Edward Herring (Tammie) of Blythe, GA, and Karl Louis Herring (Angelia) of Lincolnton, GA; and two daughters: Anita Montgomery of Hephzibah, GA, and Frances Shelton (Benny) of Augusta; 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Gwen, better known to her friends and relatives in Dublin as one of the Hatcher twins, was a native of Laurens County, Dublin, Georgia. As a member of the First Baptist Church in Dublin, Georgia, she was a soloist in the choir and a teacher of Sunday School classes and the Sunbeams.
She was a graduate of Georgia Baptist Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia. She was employed as an R.N. by the VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA for 20 years and later at Georgia Regional Hospital until her retirement in 2003. She also worked at the University Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Burke County Hospital and approximately three years at the Richmond County Health Department. She and her family have lived in the Augusta area since 1965.
After moving to Augusta, she joined the First American Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, choir director, soloist, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and Youth Director. She served as a member of the Boy Scout Council and was an instructor for the Red Cross, WOW Rangers and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In later years she became a member of Blythe Baptist Church where she shared her musical talent. She was also a prayer warrior for the Charles Stanley Ministries for years.
Services for Gwendolyn Herring will be conducted Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Blythe Baptist Church, 2002 W County Line Road, Blythe, GA. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. with a celebration of life service immediately following at 11:00 a.m.; Pastor Josh Caines presiding. Graveside services will follow on the Church grounds. Pallbearers will be Grandsons - Tim Herring, Jason Herring, Jonathan Herring, Scott Montgomery, Keith Herring, James (Jay) Herring, Blake Herring, Grant Herring, and Brian Herring.
