James M Godowns

James Mervin Godowns entered into eternal rest on April 3, 2018 at Doctors hospital in Augusta, Georgia. James was born on March 3, 1931, a native of Avera, Georgia. He lived most of his life in Augusta, Ga. He was a devoted husband, father and papa. James enjoyed life's simple pleasures including; fishing, tinkering with things and fixing it with duct tape, mini gardening and car trading. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korea conflict, after which he worked for State Farm Insurance until his retirement. He was a faithful member and Deacon of Fleming Baptist Church and the South Augusta Exchange Club. James is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Mary Ellen Stroud Godowns; three children, Nancy A. Newman (Doug), J. Michael Godowns (Meredith), Sharon K. Greenway (Jimmy); nine grandchildren, Steve Newman (Charyll), Staci N. Riner (Dwayne), Shanon N. Rentz (Benji), Erin G. Mobley (Evan), Justin A. Greenway, J. Matthew Godowns, Katelyn G. Johnson (Mitch), Natalie C. Godowns, and Collin Godowns; nine great-grandchildren, Jennifer Zumbro, Nathan Riner, Daniel Rentz, Noah Rentz, Kinsley Johnson, Brooks Johnson, Malachi Godowns, Layla Mobley and Grayson Mobley; sister-in law, Edna Stroud and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Otis Godowns and Myrtle Rhodes Godowns; step- mother, Lucy Stroud Godowns; brother, Elton O. Godowns; and brother -in law, Donald Stroud. The family will receive friends 12:30 PM until the service hour on Monday, April 9,2018 in the family life center at Fleming Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Rev. Billy Atkins, Pastor Dwayne Riner (grandson- in law) and Rev. Patrick Latta will be officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in law; Steve Newman, Benji Rentz, Matthew Godowns, Mitch Johnson, Collin Godowns, Justin Greenway and Evan Mobley. Honorary pallbearers will be current and past deacons of Fleming Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers; donations may be made to the Fleming Baptist Church Family Life Center, 3027 Peach Orchard Rd, Augusta, GA 30906.
