John was born in Athens, GA to Elmer and Grace Spratlin. Growing up in Athens, he and his brother Buddy, would sell peanuts for a nickel a bag at Sanford Stadium when the bleachers were still wooden. John moved to Augusta where he met the love of his life and future wife, Marian Key. He started to work for Gordon Farmer at Augusta Concrete Block Company until his retirement in 2006. In his off time he loved going to Gatlinburg, TN and later in life John picked up the game of golf and loved playing with his friend, the late Wiley McDaniel.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Marian; daughter, Vicky Spratlin; sisters, Edna King (Doug), Marie Kelly (Tom B), Dot Stephens (Willard) and Sara Bailey (Dan); brother, Harry “Buddy” Spratlin; nephews, Tony Spratlin and Tommie Kelly.
John is survived by his son, Wayne Wells (Linda); daughter, Valerie Spratlin (Kenny); the light of his life, granddaughter, Kayla Rayburn; nieces, Terri Jo Evans (Wallace), Tina Burkhalter, Donna Morris (Bryan), Debbie Spratlin and Nancy Raines; nephews, Kim Stephens (Pat), Gene Stephens (Ty), Harry Spratlin (Heidi), Danny Bailey (Denise), Gene Key (Vanessa), Robbie Key and David Key (Rosemary).
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Benjamin Towe for over forty years as his PCP, Dr. Hubert, Dr. Ana and the staff of Hephzibah Pharmacy for their care and compassion.
A memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road at 3:00pm. Reverend Frankie May officiating with burial at Passworth Cemetery.
