He was born on April 18, 1937 in New York City, NY, to the late Leon Johnson, Sr., and Olivia Johnson. Leon served in the United States Army for a short time and later enlisted into the United States Air Force where he had a career in communications as a ham radio operator. After retirement from the Air Force, he purchased a ham radio and continued to practice his communications skills as a hobby at home. Leon also enjoyed taking family road trips and cooking. As a young child, he was raised in the Catholic faith, but in his adult years he embraced Christian beliefs. Leon was jolly, pleasant, considerate and would always greet you with a smile. He often extended a helping hand to others when they were in need.
Leon is survived by wife of 52 years, Catherine Johnson, daughters; Stacy Johnson, Tonya Johnson, Cathy Johnson, Tammy Johnson, Bernice Sloan, Bernita Cason, sons; Andre Johnson, Trenton Johnson, Leon Johnson, and Martin Johnson, sister, Dieudonne Carelock, dozens of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, September 17, 2020 at the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
