Mrs. Bernard Joseph Doris, nee Maude Victoria Gary II, 89, entered into rest on September 30, 2013 in Mt Pleasant, SC where she lived for the past eight years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irene Merilise von Kamp and William Theodore Gary, junior; her husband, Bernard Joseph Doris; her infant son, Thomas Patrick Doris III; and her brother, Albert von Kamp Gary. Mrs. Doris, a native Augustan, graduated from Tubman High School for Girls and then attended Junior College of Augusta. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1945 and remained a loyal Bulldog fan. After a secretarial career, Mrs. Doris retired when she married “Kokey” Doris in 1954. She was a devoted wife as well as a tireless, well-loved mother with a big laugh and strong opinions. She enjoyed fishing and was an accomplished contract bridge player and an avid world traveler. She was a former member of The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, the Spinster’s Club, the Sundial Garden Club, and the Augusta Country Club. She transferred membership in The Junior League and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America to the Charleston, SC chapters in 2005. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Church of Charleston, SC. She is survived by her brother, William Theodore Gary III and his wife, Judith McLaughlin Gary, in addition to ten nieces and nephews. She is also survived by six children and their spouses plus twenty-one grandchildren: Catherine Doris Woodhurst and husband Robert Stanford Woodhurst III of Augusta, GA and their children – Robert Stanford Woodhurst IV of Atlanta, GA, William Gary Woodhurst of College Park, MD, Alice Carwile Woodhurst of Augusta, GA, Catherine Brooks Woodhurst of Augusta, GA and Leila Hammond Woodhurst of Augusta, GA; Bernard Joseph Doris, junior and wife Marcia Gagnon Doris and their children – Lindsey O’Callaghan Doris and Elizabeth “Bunny” Cyr Doris, all of Augusta, GA; Irene Doris Sulkowski and husband John Peter Sulkowski of Charleston, SC and their children – Thomas Joseph Sulkowski of Houston, TX, Theresa Ann Sulkowski of Tucson, AZ, and Mary Angela Sulkowski of Tucson, AZ; Andrew Terence Doris II, and wife Cynthia Kill Doris and their children – Merilise Victoria Doris, Andrew Terence Doris III, Lauren Elizabeth Doris, Timmon Patrick McEachron and Cala Evelyn McEachron all of Suwanee, GA; Anna Doris Wilds and husband Ashley Sloan Wilds and their children – Ashley Sloan Wilds, junior and Patrick O’Callaghan Wilds, all of Augusta, GA ; and Martha Doris Freshley and husband Bruce Palmer Freshley and their children – Bruce Palmer Freshley, junior, Hamilton Phinizy Freshley, Mary Doris “Sissy” Freshley and Leland Reinhart Freshley, all of Mount Pleasant, SC. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Melissa Lee, and to the staff of Sandpiper Nursing Home. Their care and devotion brought comfort to Maude in her final years. The Vigil for the Deceased will be held and the Holy Rosary will be recited at 5 PM, Friday, October 4, 2013 in the Day Chapel of St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church, Augusta, GA. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church at 11 AM, Saturday, October 5, 2013 with The Rev. Thomas Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following in the Narthex of the church. Private interment in the Doris family plot in Magnolia Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, 720 Telfair Street, Augusta, GA 30901 or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 888 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family. If I had known about her passing I would have came to the funeral to pay my respects. Aunt Maude was always a very kind and sweet hearted person, I always enjoyed her company. She will be surely missed. Love you aunt Maude.

I was saddened to hear about the loss of Mrs. Doris . I know that she and Mr. Doris were good friends of my parents and I still enjoy a relationship with Bernard . My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family at this time. She will be greatly missed.

To the Sulkowskis and all, we are so sorry for your loss. I never had the chance to meet her, but she must have been a wonderful lady to create a family as good as yours. You guys will continue to be in our prayers and I wish you days of happiness ahead.
