

Mr. Mitchell was born in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Marion and Ruth Mitchell. He served in the United States Navy serving in the Korean Conflict. While in the military he earned various awards and medals including, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After serving in the military, Mr. Mitchell worked as a switchman for Georgia Railroad and later retired after 39 years from Norfolk Southern Railroad. In his spare time he enjoyed helping his family and friends with anything they needed, enjoyed fishing and his family and friends would often find him on the porch bird watching. He was also known for being an hour early anytime he had to be somewhere. He had a story or joke for anyone he encountered and always loved a hug, especially from the ladies. Mr. Mitchell was also a member of Miracle Baptist Church in McBean, GA.
Mr. Mitchell is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Mitchell; parents, Marion and Ruth Mitchell; daughter, Cheryl Mitchell Morris; and grandson, Richard Dolin Lariscy. Survivors include his daughter, Debra Mitchell Jones (Tom); son-in-law, Martin Morris; grandchildren, Amber Velazquez (Elmer), Andrew Whisnant (Ashley), Gabrielle Whisnant, Brian Jones (Lindsey) and Bradley Jones (Grace); great-grandchildren, Blayne Gates, Mason “Red” Gates, Bentley Gates, Cayson Jones, Oakley Jones, Dawson Whisnant and Colton Whisnant; very close friends, the Eskew Family; and his beloved four-legged companion, Shadow.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home on Lumpkin Road. Pallbearers who will honor Mr. Mitchell will be his grandchildren.
