

Mr. Mayson is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Sylvia Moutos Mayson; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Penland Mayson III and Wanda of Augusta and Dr. Mark James Mayson and Julie of Columbia, South Carolina; one daughter, Catherine Christina Mayson of Atlanta; one brother, R. Grey Mayson of North Augusta, South Carolina; one sister, M. Jeanene Mayson, North Augusta, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Alexandra Marie Mayson, William Penland Mayson IV, James Harper Mayson and Trado Demet Mayson.
Mr. Mayson graduated from North Augusta High School as class valedictorian. He earned his chemical engineering degree at Georgia Tech where he served on the student council and joined Sigma Nu fraternity. Following graduation, he spent two years in the Army Chemical Corps. He then returned to Augusta and was employed for thirty-nine years by DuPont at the Savannah River Plant.
Mr. Mayson attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church all of his life and served as senior warden, junior warden, treasurer, finance chairman and vestryman. He was instrumental in the construction of the Riverwalk addition to the parish.
He was also very active in the Augusta community having served on the Augusta City Council for seventeen years and having chaired the finance, public safety and public works committees. He chaired the municipal government committee of the State of Georgia Municipal Association. He also served on the Bush Field Airport Commission. He was president of Historic Augusta, Main Street Augusta and the Augusta Symphony League. He served on the board of Augusta Chamber of Commerce, Augusta United Way, Augusta Red Cross, The Salvation Army and the Episcopal Day School.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM, Monday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Richard Sanders, Rector; The Rev. James Silcox, Assistant Rector; and The Rev. Dr. Kathleen Blanchard, Deacon will officiate. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be William Crane Garren, Jr, William Nicholas Agostas, Jr., James Louis Becton, Jr., John Herndon Williams, Michael Clark Williams, John Chris Moutos, William Penland Mayson, IV and James Harper Mayson. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow members of the Sand Hills Investment Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Memorial Fund, 605 Reynolds Street, Augusta, Georgia 30901.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to Nicole Griffe, Shirley House, Kathy Kabinsky, Latonya Nugin and Laquita Shaw for the exemplary care and love shown to Pen.
