Peg died February 27, 2015 at the age of 100½ in Aurora, Colorado. Her death followed a heart attack and a brief stay in The Medical Center of Aurora.
She was born August 13, 1914 at Union Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts.
Her parents were Robert Salmond and Catherine French Jack Salmond both of whom immigrated to the United States from Scotland. Peg was the youngest of three children.
Her family initially lived in Fall River, Massachusetts. They then moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts for most of her school days. She attended Winslow primary school, James Madison Morton Junior High School and New Bedford High School. The family returned to Fall River where she graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1932.
Following high school Peg attended Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing. She received her degree of Registered Nurse in 1935. She worked as a private duty nurse, industrial nurse and a general duty staff nurse until her marriage in March of 1942.
Peggy was married to Lester B Hetherington. Les and Peg had attended Durfee High School together. At the time of their marriage Les was stationed at Lowery Army Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. Peg moved to Denver in 1942. They made their home at 1117 Pennsylvania Street. Les was eventually shipped overseas. While he was deployed, Peg returned to live with her family in Fall River, Massachusetts.
At the conclusion of WWII, Les was discharged and he returned to Fall River. Both Peg and Les missed Colorado. After a short time they returned and purchased their first home at 2020 Fulton in Aurora Colorado during October of 1949. By 1954 their home was just too small for their three children. Late in 1954 Peg and less moved to 1057 Quentin Street in Aurora. It was here that they would stay and raise their family.
Through the sixties Peg worked part time in the ICU ward at Mercy Hospital in Denver. She would maintain her RN license until the early 1990’s.
Les died in 1978. Peg sold their home and moved to Heather Gardens in Aurora after a couple of years in the “big” house alone. Heather Gardens was her home until March of 2011 when she moved to Saint Andrews Village assisted living. It was in Saint Andrews that she lived the last four years of her life. Peg loved Aurora and was proud to call it home for just over 65 years.
Les made friendships when in the service that lasted literally a lifetime. While Peg was the last survivor, friendships with the Doans, the Scenas, the Martinezs and the Stavermans lasted until one by one they all passed away.
Peg is survived by her three children and their spouses, Anne Bernal of Nashville, Tennessee, Jean and Steve Mohler of Marietta, Georgia, Ron and Denise Hetherington of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous loving nieces, a nephew and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Les who died December 2, 1978, her brother Malcolm Salmond who died in April of 1985 and her sister Isabel Salmond Ward who died in March of 2004.
She was devoted to her church, Aurora First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the church from the time she moved to Aurora. There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday morning March 7, 2015 at 11:00AM. The service will be held at her church which is located at 1585 Kingston Street, Aurora, Colorado 80010.
Peg will be buried with her Les at Fort Logan National Cemetery on March 11 at 11:00 AM. She was very clear in her wish that friends would make donations directly to her church rather than sending flowers.
“A good long life, well lived without regret.”
