Yvette Charlise Gentry was born on January 13, 1971, in Denver Colorado. She was the second or three children of Roy W. Gentry and Ora Marie Gentry. As a child Yvette had an early interest in learning. She loved reading books and working on word games as well as playing outside with other kinds in her neighborhood.
Yvette graduated from East High School in 1989 at the age of eighteen. In that same year she gave birth to her only child, Carlisle Marissa Calhoun. Becoming a mother at an early age didn’t discourage Yvette in pursuit of higher education. Although the path to education was a winding road for Yvette, it did not deter her from her dream of graduation from college. In 1997 she graduated from the University of Denver with a B. A. in Psychology, and a Minor in Human Communication.
In the early 2000’s Yvette started and completed her journey to become a Midwife and has since helped deliver more than one hundred babies. When asked, she would say her purpose was to be God’s midwife and allow him to work through her in midwifery. Her dreams and determination led her through many trials and tribulations but she always had faith in the Lord that it would all work out. Her faith kept her going and lead her to meeting people within the Birthing community, establishing a loving and adoring bond that has lasted a lifetime. Yvette’s midwifery was her passion, delivered with love and kindness. Although Yvette did not realize her dream of owning her own practice, she did realize her love of reliving babies and being the Mid-wife, that God called her to be.
Yvette loved to laugh and whoop it up with anyone who was brave enough to challenge her in a game of dominoes. She loved to read and to travel whenever she got the chance. She spoke French and often reminisced about her time spent in the south of France, Saint Tropez. A weekly ‘must do’ was Chili Cheese with her daughter every Friday. She enjoyed self-pampering herself by going to the spa or getting her nails done. She was a big advocate of self-care and wellness.
Yvette’s love for God was unfailing. She would spend time with the Lord every morning and read the bible every day. She wanted to be known as God’s “Warrior Princess” and she was! Yvette walked with the Lord in everything she did and always made sure that the Lord was the foundation of how she lived her life. Her love for the Lord was evident in her life and she walked with Jesus until he called her home. She was preceded in death by her sister, Andrea Marie Gentry, a great grandmother, Irene “Momsie” Hicks, an aunt, Jacqueline Gentry, and an uncle, Eugene Sylvester Gentry.
The saviors that she leaves behind: daughter, Carlisle Marissa Calhoun; mother, Ora Marie Gentry; father, Roy Willis Gentry (Leatha); brother, Patrick William Gentry (Lisa); sister, Marion Warner (Gary); Step-sister, Ima Denise Turner; niece, Amber Mitchell; nephew, Darwin Mitchell; grandniece, Kaori Mitchell; grandmother, Florence Griffin; aunts, Dorothy Griffin, Lois Moore (Leon), Carolyn Anderson (Warren), and Velma Gentry, several nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and close friends.
