David, Joyce Gillard  just gave me the news of your son this afternoon. Sat. Sept 8.  It saddened me, not because he was promoted to Heaven ahead of me, but because  he was so young  & handsome. The depth of grief has no measure. And the breath of love knows no bounds.

Chris was a life filled with optimism and zest, sometimes beyond measure and always surrounded by love.

It is difficult to see how the sun can still come up in the morning after such a loss, but it does.  

Chris will always be in my heart because he was a ray of sunshine, the kind of sunshine that comes from the Bell Pilkey family.  

I am so sorry, for all of you.  And for all of us.  The loss of Christopher James Bell Pilkey has no measure, just as his life could not be bound by convention.  From Chris, we all are reminded again to treasure every day and each other.

Your family has always been a treasure in my life, with a connection that has no measure, no bounds.  We have seen each other through so many phases of life.  I first met David 44 years ago.  I remember so clearly lying on a bed with Paula next to new baby Chris in amazement, while I had my own daughter Mariah.  Such love as first time parents.  And more kids?  How do we divide our love among three children?  We don’t divide, we multiply that love.

Your family has been a multiplier of love in my life, and thank you.  Thank you for Chris, and Jenny, and Eliza.

I am broken with the news of Chris not being with us.  But, like thousands of other people, my life is improved and enriched for having him in it.  I had the pleasure of spending most of my life calling Chris a dear friend, and I'd like to share the last time we spent time together:

Chris and I loved to play music together, and he was the one person that could bring me out of my shell and make me feel like I could do anything.  We got together to "make some noise", and spent the first part of the night catching up, having a couple fancy beers and of course, many many laughs.  After that, we sat down at my piano for 3 hours straight just re-writing some of our favourite tunes into groovy, more-fun-to-play versions.  It's the only time I sang out loud with anyone other than my wife, and he pushed me to do it.  And it was the most fun I've ever had sitting at a piano.

He will be fiercely missed, and I will carry him with me in everything that I do.

Dear David and family: My dearest and sincere condolences on your loss. Remember the best of your son and keep that in your heart.  Deepest sympathies.

Chris' positive energy, acceptance of everyone, enthusiasm and bright smile are the memories we have and hold dear at Rosseau Lake College. Chris seemed to swing by often when David and I were playing music.  Swoosh... then he'd often back up, stick his smiling, bright eyed face in the room and with a little, very little, coaxing he'd stop what he was doing, and be joining in.  The guy loved music, it came naturally in the Pilkey family, and all that it did to bring people together.  I'll treasure the times it brought us together.

I have so many memories of Chris, but one in particular stands out among the rest: I remember the end of a very stressful day, I was walking back home from  the church and Chris drove by in that beer van, I think it was Steam Whistle, he saw me, called my name, and turned up the music, it was "Shook me all night long" by AC DC, and we both bopped our heads to the music, he made me smile and laugh for the first time that day. Every time I hear that song, I think of him. He had a great spirit, and a great laugh! Holding you in love, hugs and prayer.
