Donald Herman Lewis

Donald Herman Lewis was born May 9, 1933, in Pembroke, Ontario, and passed peacefully on April 23rd, 2026, at Southlake Health, with his loving wife, Kathi, by his side. He was 92 years old and was a resident of Aurora, Ontario.

Donald will be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Christopher Lewis (Laura), Jason Lewis (Meagan), Ryan Lewis, Jasmine Gavigan, Amanda Gavigan (Ruben), Shawn Gavigan (Christine), as well as 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He is also remembered with love by his daughter in law Ruth-Anne Lewis (Donald Jr.'s wife), and by his siblings, Clare Lewis and Mel Lewis (Mary).

Donald was predeceased by his wife Joyce, to whom he was married for 50 years prior to her passing, and by his children with Joyce: Donald, Dale, and Shirley Gavigan. He was also predeceased by his siblings, June Hamel, Harvey Lewis, Sarah Scott, and Elroy Lewis.

Donald began his policing career in the mid 50’s, joining in Sutton, and then went on to serve with the Aurora police force. In 1971 when York Regional Police was founded he continued his policing career where he would eventually retire as a Staff Sergeant. His life reflected steady commitment and a deep respect for community—values that continue through the many family members who, following Donald’s example, chose a path in policing to help keep communities safe.

Beyond his years of service, Donald found lasting satisfaction in the outdoors and in practical work done with care. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in retirement became a capable handyman, taking pride in building and fixing with patient attention and quiet skill.

In 2001, Donald met Kathi in Florida, where they were both snowbirds. They married a year later and shared 24 years together—years marked by companionship, devotion, and the simple grace of a life lived side by side.

A visitation will take place Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Service at 11 am at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, ON L4G 6W8
