Joan was born on December 4, 1938 to her parents the late Jack and Violet Holder. Predeceased by her brother Gary. Survived by brothers John (Cindy) and Frank (Holly).
Beloved wife of 58 years to the late Jack Patterson (2016). Loving and devoted mother of John (Lynda) and James (Mereta). Proud grandmother of Michael (Karli), Liam, Ardin, Vanessa and Sean. Loving great grandmother to Navaah and Gavin.
Joan spent 58 wonderful years with the love of her life Jack, camping, travelling, raising her boys and enjoying working together on the tasks of daily life. Many a night you could hear them singing together as they did the dishes.
Outside of the home, Joan worked with special needs children for many years.
Joan’s many hobbies and passions included reading, folk art, needlepoint and gardening. She also enjoyed playing scrabble and cribbage. The thing that brought her the most joy though was spending time with her grandchildren.
Joan was a lifelong resident of Aurora and was very dedicated to her hometown. She spent many decades volunteering with the Aurora Historical Society and Hillary House.
During her last battle with cancer she showed incredible strength and grace. She was determined to remain at home to the end with her cat Morris. Family and friends remarked about her strength and courage. It was truly inspirational.
Special thanks is extended to her personal support worker Constance who became a wonderful friend. As well, many thanks to Dr. Ma and Dr. Kassam and the staff at Southlake Hospital for their compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Southlake Cancer Centre, the Humane Society or the Aurora Historical Society would be much appreciated.
