On Tuesday, September 6 2022, John Peter Comfort age 83 passed away peacefully in Toronto, Ontario after a long illness. John was raised in Oak Ridges, Ontario along with his siblings Ron, Lawrence, Marilyn, Gary and Joanne. His parents, Herbert and Josephine, owned the Lake Wilcox General Store. Living in the country, John embraced the outdoors, nature and wildlife. John and his brother Lawrence loved to fish and hunt selling their yield to local farmers and furriers. The entrepreneurs even dug up dew worms to sell to the Universities in Toronto for their science classes. John loved to play baseball and was the pitcher (south paw) for his local high school team in Oak Ridges.
John eventually left the country life and moved to Toronto in the 1950’s where he began his career in the print media business. Working for a prominent Toronto printing company, John rose through ranks to become a top salesperson within the organization. His talent for selling and creativity led to him to start his own Advertising agency, Comfort Baker Sales Promotions Inc. In later years he would launch other successful ventures, International Graphics & Design Ltd. and Glenville Land Development Inc.
John was also a devoted father raising four boys Robin, James, John and Tim, together with his former wife, Susan Barton. After years in the city, they moved the family to King Township, where he purchased a hobby farm known as Comfort Lane Farms Inc. Another deep love of John’s was his Simmental Cattle. He took great pride in showing the award-winning livestock at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. John’s love of nature and the outdoors led him to volunteer for a time with the conservation organization, Ducks Unlimited Canada. John together with Susan, spent much of their leisure time cheering on their 4 boys in hockey tournaments throughout the province and the various sports teams and activities at St. Andrews College in Aurora. They spent their summers at their cottage in Thunder Beach where many wonderful family memories were made.
John loved his family immensely and this would grow to include his daughter in laws Paula (Robin), Debbie (John) and Kelly (Tim). He became a loving Grandpa to seven grandchildren, Katie, Samantha, Molly, Alex, John, Colin and Olivia. He loved to pass on his knowledge of wildlife and nature to them.
John is survived by his former wife Susan Barton and his siblings Lawrence (Avril), Gary (Judy), Joanne and brother-in-law Ron Ash. Predeceased by parents Herbert and Josephine and siblings Marilyn, Ron and wife Pearl.
A private family service is being held at the Aurora Cemetery on Friday September 16, 2022.
