Dear dad,
I cant get over how much i miss you.. It hurts not seeing you everyday and every night.But you will always be in my heart and in my mind. I am very thankful for all the amazing memories i have with you. I just wish we could keep going and have more memories.i miss you so much and love you so much. You were and are the best thing that happened to me. You were and still are amazing. Everyone stil talks about you, i love it. makes me so happy to know that so many people loved you.You have inspired me. Im actually doing pretty good now.. i have a job, im going to school. I think i might do an apprentence ship this september. I not to sure yet, but i love kids too so i might want to be a kindergarten teacher. I need help trying to figure out what i want to be, its so hard trying to figure out what i want to do by myself, i wish you were here to help me decide! Well anyways, i need to get back to my school work. but i love you daddy and i miss you!

Dear Johnny "Cheech",

It has taken me sometime to write in this guest book because quite frankly it is still very surreal to me that you are not with us physically but it is evident through all these comments that your spirit is all around us.  You were and STILL are such a strong presence in all of our families and your friend's lives.  

I know we never saw much of each other in our "parenting years" but I have the fondest of memories of our younger days, Christmas family gatherings, horseshoe,volleyball and those very competitive baseball tournaments. Also, all those Burnt River against 4 Mile Lake pranks that we continued for a few years.

You always used to tease me in that silly voice, "KKKKKaaaattty", of course accompanied with that signature SMILE of yours, that has always stayed with me. I will always remember how my dad used to call you "Cheech"?..and how everyone thought he was your father or older brother because you both had the same colouring (hair and eyes). 

I remember one day at the cottage, you were teasing me and asking me to show you some of the Karate I had learned...and well you gave me a slight kick, which I blocked and immediately went on the offense and accidently kicked you where it really hurts for guys!  I was soooo upset that I might have done damage and I locked myself in one of the bedrooms at the cottage, cried, and wouldn't come out for almost an hour!!  Turns out no damage was done as you later fathered Dylan and Nicole whom I know you were, are and will always be proud of.  It is evident to me that your spirit lives in them and they carry many of your great qualities.  

I'll never forget going to your games when you played for the Richmond Hill Dynes and I thought you were the coolest cousin ever as they printed your picture in a program...definately homage to you being an amazing player!  I remember seeing Debbie at the games and thinking how pretty and cool she was with her black high heel leather boots. You were the ultimate couple! 

I can only say that all these memories fill me with joy and warmth and they will always be with me as so will you with us!   

    I take comfort in knowing that you are watching over us, protecting and guiding us in this crazy world but mostly I take comfort in knowing   that someday we will meet again!

It is with sadness that I realize a year has gone by without Johnny. 

I first met John (Johnny as I usually called him) when he was 15 years old and I was just starting to date his older brother Joe.  I remember going fishing down the Burnt River with him and thinking it was special that he wanted to hang out with us.
I remember all of us spending time at their Uncle Karl’s cottage and how thrilled Johnny was when his parents bought their own cottage.
When Joe and Deb met she was the love of his life and they were always together.  Anyone that would meet them would say they were the couple with the best smiles.  We spent lots of happy times at the cottage and John loved the boats, fishing and all the water sports and made sure he took everyone out.
I remember when Joe and I had our first child, Dean and they would laugh at the fact we had to bring everything but the kitchen sink with us when we went up to the cottage!  Well, Joe and I got our laugh seeing them doing the exact same thing when Dylan was born!
• Johnny was the kind of husband who adored his wife Deb and always spent quality time together.  They had a special bond that is rare to have these days.
• Johnny was the kind of father who was always there for his kids.  His presence was always at either the rink, the soccer fields or at one of Nikki’s dance recitals.  He had been known to pace the perimeter of the rink or soccer field and offering his subtle advice to his kids!  His kids meant everything to him.
• Johnny was the kind of brother who they could write pages about the many good times they shared with each other.
• Johnny was the kind of son who loved and respected his parents and was always there to help them.
• Johnny was the kind of brother-in-law who enjoyed being in the company of all of his sister-in-laws.  It was always a pleasure having him over as he appreciated a good meal and would usually be first in line to sit down at the table.
• Johnny was the kind of uncle who loved taking his nieces and nephews out fishing, tubing and waterskiing or just sitting with them by the campfire.
• Johnny was the kind of neighbor who everyone wished they had living beside them.  He would cut their grass or shovel they driveway before they got out of bed.
• Johnny was the kind of man who fulfilled the definition of courage and strength.  He fought a valiant battle against a disease that was relentless.
Our family will always remember our last time we saw Johnny waving and smiling at us on Skype.
I know you are at peace now John and  will forever love and miss you.

John had a happy childhood.  Being the youngest you know he got spoiled.  He was always a happy, energetic kid. The first couple of weeks in kindergarten my mother got a call from his teacher that John and his new school buddy kept sneaking out of class by climbing out the windows.  Good thing it was on the ground floor.  In our neighborhood there were no kids his age so he hung around with me, Frank and my friends who were a lot older.  Whatever we did he was always there in the background.  Back in those days we lived and breathed ball hockey.  Johnny loved every minute of it. 

"My best friend Ron recalled the time John called a time out and ran to the nearest tree to relieve himself so he wouldn’t miss any of the game.  He was only three feet tall.  Don’t get me wrong…..we did the same thing but at least had the courtesy to go back behind the houses."

His other passion was boats.  He loved boats and had quite a collection.  His favourite were those plastic ones (package of 4) that Kresgies used to sell.  “Made in China”.

A bathtub, ditch or puddle would keep him busy for hours.  I remember one day he goes missing and everybody on the block is looking for him.  We found him in Mr. Bawny’s garage sitting in the driver’s seat of his cedar strip boat.
 
Hockey though was his passion.  He turned out to be the best out of all of us.  From his first organized hockey to his Provincial Junior “A” days he was leading scorer on the team and in most cases the league.  I glanced through one of his books which showed he had 82 points in 30 games.  That was “Jr. A”.  Wow!!  Those of you who played with him know his determination and skill level was high.  I honestly believe if he had got a break and made it to the NHL he would have left his mark.

A turning point in our relationship happened at the cottage one weekend.
To me Johnny was always my nice, innocent, naïve baby brother.  It was when Deb came into the picture that things changed.  Well the two of them head out in the boat..1/2 hour, 1 hour, 1 ½ hours go by.  Where are those guys.  I thought the boat broke down (this was before cell phones).  So I hop into the fishing boat (Big Brother to the rescue!).  Sure enough I found them floating out in the lake.  As I approached the boat John and Deb give me that kind of look that says “What are you doing here?”  I felt like an idiot as the light bulb went on.  My little brother wasn’t really that little any more.  They just wanted some alone time. 

John turned out to be a great guy, always had a smile and wasn’t afraid of work.  He amazed me how he would get up hours before work and go to the old neighborhood and shovel the driveways of some elderly folks.  He took care of these people and their homes since he was a teenager until his late thirties or early forties.  I know it wasn’t for the money… he just had a big heart.  He also loved his job.  I personally never heard him complain about his work even when he worked with an Emergency Task Group where he would be called out at all hours of the night.  He did that job for the money!  He was also a guy who was always there for you.  If you needed help with anything John was there.  He loved to play too.  He loved everything about the cottage, snowmobiling, ATVs, horseshoe tournaments, volleyball games, skiing, tubing and most of all “fishing”.  You wouldn’t believe the hours of fishing we did.  Fishing with clouds of blackflies and mosquitos in the spring and summer and fishing in October/November with snowmobile suits and icicles hanging from our fishing rods.  Sometimes it would be snowing so hard we had no idea what direction we were going in.  

He was a dedicated family man.  He worked hard to provide for them.  John and Deb had a strong love for each other.  He loved his kids.  On the boys weekend he would always check in with them to see how they were doing.  How proud he was when the kids were waterskiing at such young ages. 
 
“Dylan, I know your dad pushed you hard at times at hockey (he learned that from his dad) but he was very proud of you and your accomplishments.  You turned out to be a good hockey player.”

“And then there’s Nikki.”  What can I say you’re his little girl and he loved you dearly.  He told me the hardest thing about dying was leaving you both.

My real admiration for John developed over his last year.  After six to eight weeks of the medical run around he was told by his doctor that there was no cure  for his cancer and he should get his affairs in order.  People at this stage take one of two roads:  They start to die or they start to live.  He chose to live.  This is the hardest choice.  He had a very aggressive cancer.  Every trickle of good news was trampled by a lot of bad news.  You have to experience it to really understand.  But it was one blow after another blow.  I could not believe how he could stay so positive.  Dying wasn’t in his vocabulary.  When he was in Texas the pain got so bad that they had to leave quickly and come back to Aurora.  We later found out he had a crushed vertebrae.  While he was walking through the airport Deb said he wouldn’t let her carry his bag.  Even with the chemo, radiation, diets and pills it didn’t kill his spirit.  I was in the dumps until I saw him in person.  I would always feel better after seeing him.  John got the most he possibly could have out of the cottage this summer…cutting the grass, riding a bike, taking the kids tubing and of course, fishing.    Let me tell you that fishing in his condition, even the doctors said, was unbelievable.  I’m in awe with the strength and determination he showed and always with a smile.  John’s life was short but he sure  did a lot of living in it.  He was such an inspiration for me.

He married a wonderful woman and raised two great kids and had a lot of close friends.  He was truly a special guy and I am very proud of him.  I am really going to miss him.  My good friend, Ron , who I have known for over 50 years and was there when John was born, told me if his mother Julie were still alive, she would say that a little bit of John’s heart is in our souls forever.  How true!  

Deb - My admiration for you is through the roof.  You put a new meaning to the words “Till death do us part”.  Thank you for your courage, your positive spirit and taking care of my brother through a terrible journey.  Thanks.

John - I think of you every day and I miss not having you around but you are always with me in spirit.

It's been about a year since we lost you but you will never leave our hearts.  The memories we made will always be cherished.  The times we spent at the cottage are among our favourite memories.  Whether it was going on fishing trips or just relaxing by the camp fire with a couple beers, you were always a pleasure to be around. You were that fun loving and charismatic guy who could make the best out of any situation.  We Love and miss you with all our hearts.

The writing of this obituary notice at the anniversary of my brother's passing comes as no surprise.  Even at this late time, it is still so very emotionally painful that I try hard not to think about it.  Having said that, however, it's almost impossible to do since a rainbow of reminders and memories appear and attest to the great guy he was.  We all know what they are and we wear them in our hearts and minds.

I miss my brother deeply and feel an emptiness.  I often think and wonder that Johnny's still around and that if I wished hard enough maybe he'll still be on some fishing or hunting trip or playing hockey or maybe he's just working overtime as he often did.  I realize that these are only wishes; it just doesn't quite feel "real" yet.  I have tried in the best way that I know how to be present for his family.  Sometimes, I'm a little tough on Dylan and Nikki but with meaningful intentions which I know my brother would have given the green light.

Both Dylan and Nikki are employed right now and this makes me proud of them -- you can't say this for every young teenager out there!  And, as for Debbie, I know that Johnny had a wife who made him very happy.  She will continue to struggle with the loss of the love-of-her-life and we will continue to support alongside her.  She has the confidence and strength to take care of their dear children just as Johnny would have most wanted.

We miss you Johnny.  We love you forever.

Dear John, It has almost been a year since your passing and I don’t think a day has gone by that we don’t think about you. We think about your smile, your laugh and the kind way you had with everyone around you. We are not sure why you had to go but we are sure the big guy up there is enjoying you as much as we did.  The fun times we all spent together will never be forgotten and your spirit lives on in us everyday. Until we meet again John.....

As we approach the first anniversary of John’s passing I can only say that I feel deeply for Debbie, Dylan, Nikki, Joe, Anne, and Joe & Frank as they lost a husband, father, son and brother.  For me I lost a true friend! I miss the phone calls every day, the kibitzing about (whatever) and my fishing partner for over thirty years, and I could never have a better partner that you. It’s been tough for me so I can’t imagine how it’s been for the family. They say you are bless if you have one or two true friends in your life, someone you just know will be there for you no matter what, John was that person and I was bless to have John as a friend. I will never forget the times we’ve shared. John's dedication to his family was first and foremost, and John loved his family!!! You are sadly missed, and forever fondly remembered.

Dear Debbie, Dylan and Nikki,

As we struggled to share what John has meant to our lives, it became clear that simple words cannot capture or display his spirit and soul.  Thankfully, there is no shortage of memories to help embrace our hearts such as images of John;

- loading his truck with something to deliver to a friend in need,
- plowing all the neighbours' driveways before the sun comes up and he has to leave for work,
- emerging from the garage, cold beers in-hand, to offer relief and his company on a hot summer day,
- playing road hockey with the neighbourhood kids and making sure they all had fun and learned some cool new moves,
- BBQing on the deck while sounds of laughter burst from Nikki and Debbie in the pool,
- getting ready to watch Dylan and Nikki compete in all of their hockey and soccer tournaments and unable to contain his pride and excitement,

And, in each and every single memory, John's smile is constant.  He truly was happiest when helping those around him and so it makes perfect sense that, even though John is not with us today, he made sure that each of us whose lives he touched would have beautiful memories to help us heal and smile.

Debbie, Dylan and Nikki, we hope that you find peace and comfort in all your memories just as everyone John touched will forever love him for sharing.

I clearly remember where and when I first met John, probably because I quickly realized that a special person had come into my life. Dear Debbie, Dylan and Nicole, I have to tell you there is not a day that goes by that our family does not think about John and the special place he holds in our heart. The boys were so lucky to have had him in their lives if only it be for a short time. Devon thinks of him every time he steps on the ice.....and his love for hockey. His smile could brighten up anyones day and he always made each and every one of us feel like we were the most important person in the room. John was like a brother to Ron and we enjoyed every moment that we spent with you guys. Even on our last visit with John he made us feel loved and welcome in your home. To Debbie, Dylan, Nikki, and the Kovacs family;
No words can touch the profound and deep loss you all must be experiencing at this time.  Who will ever be able to understand why Johnnie was taken from you so soon?  
Our memories go back over 30 years to the street where we grew up in Willowdale, the same street as the Kovacs.  My 3 brothers played hockey with the Kovacs boys so we spent many a day and night in numerous hockey rinks.  When they were young my brother Kevin spent many hours running around the arena with Johnnie.  Even at that young age you couldn't help but be drawn to Johnnie.  My sister, Marie, recalls the high school classes she shared with Johnnie.  Apparently he didn't like to study and often asked my sister for help.  She agreed.  Few could resist that smile and charm.  At the end of the term she was exempted from the final exam but Johnnie had to write it.  He was on his own for that one.
Thinking about how he gave so much to others, never asking for anything in return and the example of grace and dignity he showed throughout his illness makes you want to be a better person.  For that his short life was one truly full and well lived.  It was a privilege to have known this very caring and compassionate man.

To my dearest Debbie,

I wish that I could do something to lessen the pain that you feel right now.  I love you dearly.  The times that we are living in are truly "critical times hard to deal with".  I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it is for you right now.  Please know that I will do all that I can to help you, Dylan & Nikki.

I would like to share some of my wonderful memories that you and John gave to me.  For many years you & John invited me to spend time at your family cottage.  Some of my best memories are at the cottage with you, John, Dylan & Nik.  Some of my memories go back even further before either of us had kids.  John would get the sauna going and we would wait until the heat was unbearable then run down the dock to jump in the lake.  Sometimes John would fling me over his shoulder and then jump into the lake (ya loved that).  Sitting in the fishing boat in the middle of the lake, it is pitch black, we are drinking beer and John wouldn't take you and I back in to shore so that we could use the washroom.  Another time, we are all lying on the dock, soaking up the sun, having some drinks, enjoying eachothers company.

There are so many other wonderful memories.  I will cherish them forever!

I also have a picture of the future.  John is awake.  He is healthy and strong ... and you are there to greet him.  I hope to be there too!  That is my goal.  This is God's promise ... I did not want to believe at first, but after reading the Bible on my own ... I saw it too.  Your strength and goodness are an inspiration to me.

I've sat down at my computer several times and did not know what to say. I've never thought as John as a brother-inlaw but as a brother.I will never forget his smile in fact it is what gets me through the day, I can picture it in my mind I can see him smiling and it gives me comfort. Debbie,dylan and Nikki I will always be their for you, I love you all so very much.

It is with great sorrow and an extreme ache in my heart that I offer you Debbie, Dylan, Nikki and the Kovacs family our heartfelt condolences. I was so saddened to hear of John's illness and passing.  It was such a pleasure to call John our friend...such a kind, talented, funny and loving man. When I think back Debbie, the happy memories are endless.  All the times JP, John, you and I spent together laughing and just having fun at the cottage, baseball parks, hockey arenas or just sitting around having a few drinks and playing cards. Debbie, I'm so sorry my dear friend that you will have to endure the pain of losing the love of your life...please surround yourself with the love of your friends and family at this time as you travel this broken path.  I know JP welcomed John with a cold beer and a great big hug...I can hear them laughing right now. We would like to express our condolences to you and all the family at this very difficult time. Our daughter, Allison is Dean's girlfriend and she continually updated us on his fight with his illness and how the family were coping. We are sorry we did not have the opportunity to meet John as he appeared to be quite a guy. That was proven at the visitation with the amount of people who paid their respects to you and the family. Allison and our son Kyle were very fond of "Johnnie" and enjoyed the times they shared with him. Linda, Joe and their family are truly wonderful people and it sounds like John was just as special. We are so sorry for your loss and hope that you find some comfort in knowing how many lives your husband and father has touched in such a short period of time. Keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Kovacs Family.

I have only great memories of John. I first met him when he came on the task force in the North York Board of Education days. I had the pleasure of working along side him and laughing with him. John sure loved to laugh and made the work day seem so short. I would enjoy my lunches with John when he would share his wifes home made pizza with me. Years later when John would come to fix my machines I would always ask him if he had any of his wifes pizza in the truck. 
You will be missed John. You are the only guy to ever call me Daver and I will miss that. I dont think there is a person that you have worked with that has not shed a tear over your passing. I know I sure did.

Dear Kovacs Family

John gave the word courage and integrity a new name. The world was a better place with him in it. He had a smile that would light up a room. He had a giggle, when he would laugh
that I just loved. He was very protective of the people he loved.

I had the pleasure of working with John when he was first hired in North York. Then we became TDSB. I worked with him for years, we became friends. We always looked out for each other. How could I forget, John loved his food. When we had dinner he would eat all of his, then see if I didn't want any of mine.

I spent some time with John and his family a month ago. I will cherish that memory forever. John will always hold a special place in my heart. There will be such a void without him.
John will live on, because the memories will never be taken away.

Dear Debbie, Dylan, Nikki and Kovacs family: We are very saddened by your loss. We met Johnny when his parents bought their home across the street from ours in Aurora. In the short time that we got to know Johnny it certainly felt like a lifetime.
It wasn't a surprise for us to hear that record crowds came out to pay their respects to him. That was Johnny!!! The man with an infectious smile and always took the time to say hello and chat. His favourite snack I think was my famous deer pepperettes.
It was a privilege to have known him and an honour to remember him. May you rest in peace my friend. This world will miss you!

My sincere condolences for the loss of John.  I haven't seen John in at least 30 years but I do remember his great ability on the ice and the fun we had as kids playing road hockey in Willowdale. sincerely , Antti Patjas, Innisfil.

Words cannot express enough how sorry we are for the loss of this wonderful man. We will always remember John's awesome smile, heartwarming laugh and playfulness. The time we spent with him and the Kovacs family at the cottage are some of our fondest memories. Our condolences and prayers for strength at this difficult time go out to the entire family.

Dear Kovacs family, I always enjoyed seeing John around,talking hockey or anything to do with the outdoors. Great smile, wonderful personallity.He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. I worked with him a number of years on the Task Force with the former North York Board of Education and now the TDSB.He would stop by always at my school, just to stay in touch and he new I always had ICE COLD Water in the fridge for him to drink. So sorry to hear of the loss of your wonderful John.  

I am writing to you here on behalf of myself, Marie, and my sister Lori Farrell.  We have many happy, fun memories of time spent with you and John, and Lori and J.P.  At the arena, on the ball field playing together, and at your cottage.  Lots of fun hours playing that crazy version of ping pong where you run around the table trying to hit the ball!!  And vividly remember when someone tried to move our tent trailer while we were sleeping in it.  I think it was John's brother Frank, now that I think of it. Lots of laughs always. Lori chose to sneak away on a trip with her two girls and was so sad that she wouldn't be here for John's services.  John passed away the day before they left. She asked me to be sure to send you her thoughts and love and that she would be in contact with you when she gets back.    

We had heard that John was ill and were all praying that he would win his battle.  We are so sorry he did not.  John left a lasting impression on so many.  I see that from all the beautiful, heartfelt messages left to you.  

I'm pretty sure that J.P. would have been waiting for him with arms wide open.  I know how much John meant to him. God sure is crewing up a great team of players up there.  Sadly we want them back here with us, but I hope we can all take some comfort in knowing the men we loved are together watching over their beautiful families forever.

To the Kovacs Family , My deepest condolences to you all , I played hockey with Johnny back in our early years , 16 yrs old with Goulding Park , and became friends quickly , I remember his love for the game and how his family welcomed us all in their home . After all the years that have past we encountered eachother at a Leafs game last season and were making plans to get together and catch up . This news of his passing saddens me greatly . He was a wonderful man and gave me 3 of the greatest gifts; his love for my sister, a charming and kind nephew and a loving and passionate niece. Dear Family of John, I had John with me aa an apprentice when he was in sheet metel. A finer young man I have yet to meet.  He made me laugh everyday, his charm was endearing, a very nice man. 

He was all concearned one eviening that he was going to miss a play off game in his laat year with Richmond hill and I told him to go to his game it was more important at 21 years old than our job that night. I lost track of John but often thought of him a great kid.

To Debbie Mr and Mrs Kovacs,Frank,Joe Im sorry for ur loss of a husband son and brother.although I have only got to see John at my school in last few years since our great times at the baseball field Johnny always had time shoot breeze with me and came right away when was needed.we always had a laugh everytime he came by,and he helped out my brother with few things and was always more then happy give some help.I will never forget my baseball years of him on my team he was always determined do his best and he sure did.also when i was at the cottage had many laughs with him out fishing and bonfires.Just wanted say the world shoulda had more people like him for he was a true kind gentleman and will be missed imensley.My brother Jim and my folks wish u all our dearest sympathies---------

We can remember hockey at the Olive house, games as a Richmondhill ram, swimming, fishing and boat rides at Four Mile Lake, heck even boat rides for our kids. John was a warm, genuine person who always had a smile on his face. It was a great pleasure to say that we knew him as kids and as adults. God bless you John. You will be missed.

Dear John:
 
I wanted to take this opportunity to say a few things. 

First of all, I wanted to say "Thank you”.  I have a lot of great memories from our friendship. From hockey to golf, to fishing, to just hanging out having a beer. It's been great. 

I remember "The look”.  That look that would wash over you face when you got determined. When you got a "bee in your bonnet" as Craiger would say. 

Mostly, I remember your laugh, that unique Johnny K laugh. I'll never forget it.

I also wanted to say you made me a better person. The example you set inspired me to greater things. I can only assume your character was instilled by your parents and as I've gotten to know Dylan over the last couple years I can see it in him. Nikkie too seems like a great girl and you should feel confident that they'll both be okay. So will Debbie. You have given them everything a great husband and father could have and more. That's just the way you were. You raised the bar for everyone whose life you touched.

I feel fortunate to have been able to call you my friend. The only regret I have is I never told you this while I had the chance. I guess I never really believed this day would come.

Lastly, I just wanted to say "Good bye”.   I hope someday we’ll meet again. Until then, keep your head up and your stick on the ice.

I can’t remember if I first met John on a guy’s weekend at Doug’s trailer or playing hockey after work but I do remember how much I enjoyed his company.  
John was always smiling and had a way of making you feel welcome.  He was one of the most genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.  He always worked hard and played hard and man, did he like to fish.  I remember being out fishing with him on a weekend in October for at least five or six hours and nearly froze to death but I enjoyed every minute because John was there with me.  
John touched a lot of lives including mine and left me with some very fond memories.  I know he’ll be deeply missed by everyone that knew him.

Dear Debbie
I am so sorry to hear about John. 
I will always be greatful for the year that he taught Matthew to take "faceoffs".  Over the years people have commented on Matthew's ability to win the puck and I always gave credit to John. I wish we had been on the same team more because John was amazing with the kids.
We are on holidays next week and will not be able to attend John's celebration of life but please know that we will be thinking of you and the kids on that day.
