It is with great sadness that the family announces Karl’s passing at MacKenzie Health Long Term Care on November 5th at the age of 81. Karl will be lovingly remembered by his 3 daughters – Kristina (Vaughn Spence), Marisa (Frank Gallo) and Bruni (Paul Mulchan), his six grandchildren, Tyler, Tara, Trevor, Maiella, Taylor and Kayla, great-grandson Kingston and his siblings in Germany - Johannes (Illona), Rainer (Maria), Hubert (Petra), Norbert, Maria. Karl was predeceased by his wife Ellen. He will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality, sense of humor and his love of the outdoors. He was always a hard worker and was always there to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbours.
Karl came to Canada at the age of 19. A patternmaker by trade, he was a skilled carpenter whose earlier work included construction and cabinetmaking. He later joined the TTC where he worked for 35 years as a bus driver and then as a subway operator. Throughout his life, he maintained his passion for carpentry. He loved woodworking and made many beautiful and well-crafted pieces of furniture for his daughters and family over the years that are still cherished today. His propensity for precision in his woodworking will be dearly remembered.
Karl enjoyed collecting model trains, antique cars and baseball caps. He loved to play Euchre and cribbage and often played between shifts during his time with the TTC and on weekends with neighbours. He loved his beer, swimming and the outdoors. Camping canoeing and campfires at Algonquin Park was a favourite pastime of his. He also loved to tend to his vegetable garden and after retiring from the TTC, volunteered at Pioneer Village as a gardener. His outgoing nature and boisterous personality will be missed.
Donations in memory of Karl can be made to MacKenzie Health Hospital or Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care received from the staff at MacKenzie Health Long Term Care. A heartfelt thank you for their care and support for the past 4 years.
