She was born on June 12, 1941, in Tianjin, China into a family of devout 4th generation Catholics. Her family suffered and was persecuted during her childhood, as her older brother was sent to prison for 30 years for his Catholic faith.
In 1973 she married Shang Ching Chou. Despite his lack of social status/money/education, she remained loyal and stayed with him through great hardships.
Her husband ultimately was able to earn a scholarship at UT Austin and brought the family to the US. Now in her mid 40s, she tried hard to integrate herself in the US, but she also battled cultural differences, demons from childhood, as well as health issues such as Parkinson's and stroke.
Huiling took her Catholic faith seriously and it help sustained her through life’s ups and downs. And just like her greatest hero - her older brother, hardships only strengthened her resolve and her faith.
Huiling is survived by her husband of 49 years, Shang-Ching Chou, who took care of her selflessly and with great patience - especially during the last two, when she was completely bedridden. She is also survived by her older sister Fengling Dong, son Paul Chou, daughter-in-law Sharon Zhang, and her 3 grand daughters - Myla, Geneva, and Elaina Chou.
May Huiling rest in peace.
