
Alda G. Williamson, age 87, of Austin, died September 22, 2008. She was born December 31, 1920, in Hickory, N.C., and attended the public schools there. She graduated with honors from Lenior Rhyne College with majors in history, English and Biology. She was granted a Fellowship at the University of Maryland and received her Master's degree there in 1944. For the next ten years she worked at universities and libraries. Beginning in 1944, she was an Instructor in History and Government at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, followed by four years as Assistant Professor of History at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. For two summers she was a bibliographer at the Library of Congress and for four years she was a supervisor at the University of Chicago Library. For the last 33 years of her career, she was Archivist, writer and information specialist at the corporate headquarters of United Parcel Service in New York City and later in Greenwich, Connecticut. She did research to help develop company policies and to expand its services in the U.S. and to parts of Europe and Asia. Alda lived to work and learn new things. After retiring in 1988, she moved from New York City to the warmer winters of Austin, with its friendly people and wonderful libraries. Graveside prayers will be held at Austin Memorial Park (2800 Hancock Drive) Thursday, September 25 at 2:00 PM.
