Alice Powell Jones

Alice Powell Jones departed this life at age 92 on March 11, 2011. She was born Alice Jackson Powell, on June 8, 1918 in Nashville, Tennessee to parents Colonel Andrew Jackson Powell and Elizabeth Collins Powell.

During her early years, Alice and her parents lived in many locations across the United States including Hawaii, during Colonel Powell’s army career. Alice attended college at the University of North Dakota where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. In 1942, the family returned to Nashville, where the Colonel retired, building the family home on Lebanon Road, where her mother lived until 2002 to the age of 106.

In 1951, Alice married Sherwood Prentice Jones who graduated from Penn State University. They had a son, Andrew Sherwood Jones. They lived in Mount Arlington, New Jersey where Sherwood built a home near Lake Hopatcong. After Sherwood’s career as a metallurgist for Engelhard Industries, they retired to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1972. During her years in Florida, Alice loved traveling with a Tampa Bay church group to many places around the world, including England, Egypt, France, Italy, and Alaska. Alice enjoyed reading and playing the organ, and was a member of her sorority’s alumni group.

In 1996 after the passing of her husband, Alice moved to Austin, Texas to live with her son, Andrew, his wife Nancy and granddaughter, Jennifer. She then moved to Englewood Estates in Austin before moving on to Regency Village Care Center.

Alice is preceded in death by husband, Sherwood Prentice Jones; parents, Colonel Andrew Jackson Powell and Elizabeth Collins Powell, brother George B. Powell, wife, Mary Bonnie Powell, and niece, Diana Kay Powell, of Nashville.

She is survived by her son, Andrew Sherwood Jones, his wife, Nancy Richards Jones, and granddaughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Jones, of Austin; nephews Toby D. Powell and Tommy Powell, and wife, Janet, of Nashville, Tennessee.

A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Regency Village Nursing Home, 6500 Brush Country Rd., Austin, TX 78749.
