Amelia “Mel” Jaramillo, 89, of Austin, Texas, passed away on April 28th, 2026, surrounded by the love of family. Born in Caldwell County and raised in Austin, Mel was the heart of every gathering — generous, kind, and always ready with a warm smile and a plate of home-cooked food.
Her signature work ethic and independence started early at five years old; Mel began her journey of learning at home while her parents worked long hours in the cotton fields. This early foundation shaped the woman she became—one who found joy in providing for others. She loved being in the kitchen, feeding loved ones and creating memories.
She is survived by her sister, Judy Parks, her nephews, Ausencio Ojeda Jr. and Jay C. Burdick (who she raised); many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a wide circle of family who were touched by her spirit.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Diego Jaramillo; siblings Ausencio Ojeda Sr., Lucy Moreno, Lydia Limon, Maria Cortez, and Joe Ojeda Jr.; her parents, Trinidad and Joe Ojeda Sr.; and her nephew, James Burdick III.
Mel’s kindness and caring nature brightened countless lives. She will be deeply missed, but her warmth, stories, and recipes will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. May she rest in peace.
