Anita Schmitt Benson passed away March 7 in the presence of loving family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Anita was born in Kassel Germany on May 13, 1942. She came to the United States in the mid-1960s and lived in Sumter, South Carolina. In 1974 she and her family were transferred to Zweibruken AFB, Germany. In 1977, the family moved to Austin, where her husband was stationed at Bergstrom AFB. Anita spent many years in hotel and apartment management. The last six years, she was an award winning sales associate for Dillards in Barton Creek Mall. Making special trips was her favorite pastime. The family would like to thank Dr Mark Crozier for his wise and abiding care over the years. They also wish to thank the caring nurses and doctors at both South Austin Hospital and Seton Medical Center, with special thanks to David Engle, hospice nurse. Anita is survived by her son Joe, brothers Karl, Michael and Peter, and sisters Edeltraud and Erika, and a number of nephews and nieces. Anita is also survived by a host of loving friends, some of which traveled long distances to be with her in her final hours. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, please make contributions to Hospice Austin.
