Anita Voelkel Mickey, 90, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, in Austin. Anita was born in La Grange on August 21, 1935, to Leola and Kermit Voelkel, and soon thereafter moved to Austin, where she lived for almost all of her life. She graduated from Austin High School and the University of Texas, where she studied Business Administration in the Plan II Honors program, and was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She then moved to Washington, D. C., where she worked for three years in the office of then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. She married Robert Gordon Mickey, of Austin, in 1962, and they had two children, Elizabeth and Robert. Anita remained dedicated to her family and friends throughout her life.
Anita was devoted to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where she served for four decades on the Altar Guild. Among her volunteer work, closest to her heart was Austin’s Settlement Home for Children, and especially its annual garage sale. She was also active in the Women’s Symphony League, and was a long-time docent at the Governor’s Mansion. Anita loved all things Port Aransas, and shared that love, and her love of travel, with her children and grandchildren. In her later years, Anita continued to play bridge, and even added poker to her repertoire.
Anita was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Greg Lisso, of Marietta, Georgia; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Mickey and Jennifer Traig, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; her grandchildren, Alex and Sarah Lisso and Rachel and Samuel Mickey; and her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Alton Greeven, of Austin.
The family would like to thank the memory care nurses at The Gardens of Buda who treated her with such love in her last year. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 2pm, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd (3201 Windsor Road). Arrangements are under the direction of Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Settlement Home for Children of Austin (1600 Payton Gin Road, Austin, TX 78758 and www.settlementhome.org/donate).
