Anne was born in Forest Glen, Illinois to Gen. Henry Anson and Margaret Wahl Barber, and raised in the Army life, spending her formative years in Caracas, Venezuela, Madrid, Spain, and her favorite, Havana, Cuba. Her college-prep was at Holton Arms in D.C. During summer break from Vassar College she met a handsome young fighter pilot, G.R. Bob Brooking, and they soon embarked on a love-filled adventurous 59 year voyage together.
Anne was the consummate officer's wife, and enjoyed carefully balancing those duties with providing a loving, stable, if ever-changing home life for her children. Upon Dad's retirement from a 30 year career in the Air Force, Mom became immersed in Austin life, joining the Austin Women's Club, the Pan-American Club, the Retired Officer's Wives Club and her true-love, The Reader's Guild, of which she was most recently President.
She loved Beauty and found it in most everything.
She believed in Kindness and thought simple acts could change the world.
She loved Language and Reading and Writing Poetry.
She loved English Country Lanes and Autumn Leaves.
She loved Music and Dancing.
An intelligent, generous, and kind person, she will be inexorably missed by her son, Rob Brooking and wife Rose; daughter, Kit Brooking and partner Fran Adams; honorary grandson, Chad Adams, honorary granddaughter, Josy Adams Johnson and husband Craig; and four great-grandchildren, Reed, Hazel, Ruby and Nell, as well as countless grand-dogs. Also left to mourn are her beloved nephew, Hal Barber IV and wife Laura, of Denver, CO, and numerous other members of the family.
