He was born August 10, 1945, in Birkenhead, England to Arnold Jellicoe Price and Gwendoline Alice Fanny (Tudor) Price just hours after the second atomic bomb detonated over Nagasaki, Japan, bringing an end to World War II. After high school, he attended Liverpool University, earning a B.Sc. (with honors) in Physics in 1966 and a Ph.D. in Engineering in 1969.
Looking for adventure and broader world experience, he relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he worked as a senior engineer at a local engineering consulting company. Almost by a twist of fate, in 1971 he was invited to join the faculty of the prestigious graduate School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia as an Assistant Professor, where he was head of graduate studies in building sciences. During his time at UBC, he published over twenty academic papers in peer-reviewed engineering journals as well as a two-volume graduate-level textbook titled Noise and Noise Control.
After five years as an academic, he started on a path of a completely new career and formed Price Walker & Associates, a real estate investment firm in Vancouver that later expanded into five states in the US. The firm began business in Austin, Texas in 1979. In 1986 he married Debbie Rodriguez in Austin, and they later had one beautiful daughter Alexis Price in 1991. John took his family on many wonderful vacations to far-reaching parts of the world. He excelled in snow skiing, watersports, golf, and tennis.
During the next thirty years, John developed many successful real estate projects in central Texas, including numerous award-winning residential communities in Austin and surrounding areas. In 2016 he took a position as Senior Vice-President for 29th Street Capital, a multi-billion-dollar investment fund, and continued in that position until 2020 when Covid struck the world, and he decided to retire.
In 2015 he was invited to be the honored guest of the Department of Physics at Jesus College, Oxford University at their annual grand Domus Dinner event as their “person of special interest” as he never gave up his keen interest in Physics throughout his life.
John is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Debbie Price, and their daughter Alexis Price, and by his daughter Rachel Price and grandson Sebastian Fairly, of Vancouver, and daughter Caroline Price of Vancouver.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on July 30, 2023 at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas.
