Bahij Suleiman Nuwayhid, MD, PhD, 75, retired Professor and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University, of El Paso, TX passed away on January 22, 2019, surrounded by his family and friends.
Born the 26th of July, 1943, the son of the late Suleiman and Adele (Alameh) Nuwayhid. He grew up in Beirut, Lebanon where he attended the American University of Beirut, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1964 and Doctor of Medicine in 1968. He received his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Case-Western University, Cleveland, Ohio and his Perinatal Fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles under the esteemed Professor Nicholas S. Assali. His first academic appointment was an Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Over the course of his career he rose through the ranks of academia from Assistant Professor to Full Professor during his tenure at Mc Gill University in Montreal, Quebec.
During his first sabbatical in 1982 he studied with the world famous Dr. Arthur C. Guyton at the University of Mississippi and received his PhD in Physiology in 1985. In 1991, he took his second sabbatical at Dartmouth College in the Department of Molecular Biology.
Even in retirement he actively helped his previous trainees and colleagues in reviewing research proposals and scientific articles. He started to write his memoirs but was interrupted by his illness.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Anschutz Nuwayhid of El Paso, Texas and his son, Dr. Ziyad B. Nuwayhid of Austin, Texas; brother Hikmat Nuwayhid; sister Mona Ibrahim of Beirut, Lebanon. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Nizar Nuwayhid of Belmont, MA. He is loved by his nieces, nephews and cousins all over the world.
The funeral will take place on Sunday, January 27th at the Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Park, 6300 West William Cannon Drive, Austin, Texas, 78749. The viewing will take place at 10:00 A.M. Burial to follow at 11:30 A.M. at the cemetery connected to the funeral home.
A memorial to celebrate his life and career will take place on a future date in El Paso, Texas.
The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either St. Jude’s Children’s Research or to the American Cancer Society in his name.
