Barbara Joyce Smith Wilson, of Austin, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She was born in Fentress, Texas on May 23, 1930 to Olga Mae Houston and Barber Bine Smith.

She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1948. On April 21, 1951, she married Curtis Dean Wilson at Central Methodist Church in Austin. He preceded her in death.

Barbara spent many years in the legal profession as a secretary and bookkeeper, before becoming a full time grandmother and pie and praline maker. For many years, she and Curtis had a place in the country near Fentress, Texas. Then they moved in 2002 to a small ranch near Eldorado, Texas, where they spent many happy hours observing wildlife and the beautiful outdoors of their beloved West Texas. Their journey then took them to Lampasas, Texas for several years before returning home to Austin.

Barbara Joyce was an active member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. She also enjoyed many years with the Austin High School’s Ladies Luncheon Group and was secretary of the Hyde Park Reading Club. She loved spending time with her family and friends, watching University of Texas sports, and cooking.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Wilson Oliver and husband, Jeff of Austin; grandchildren, Ty Wilson Wheeler and fiancé, Christy Burleson, and Brett Olan Wheeler and wife, Logan of San Antonio, and Brooke Bailey Oliver of Austin. Barbara cherished her family and was extremely proud of them. She absolutely loved being a mother and grandmother.

Barbara is also survived by her brother Charles Houston Smith (Marilyn); sister, Peggy Smith Dahlstrom (Charles Henry); sisters-in-law, Jonnye Dickard (Paul), and Carolyn Baer (Charlie); and nephews and nieces as well.

The family will receive friends at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 with funeral services following at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.

The family thanks Dr. Dina Tebcherany, Nurse Ashley Leon and the rest of the staff at Texas Oncology for their devoted and loving care.

What a Blessing Barbara was to me and my Family! She was such a wonderful friend and neighbor. She and Curtis were so happy during their time in Eldorado. I am already missing her homemade pies and candy. She was an Amazing cook. If there was a bake sale, church gathering, family get together she always made pies. I Loved them both like family. In Christ, Becky and Mike Lux, Seth, Garrett
