It is with profound sorrow and immeasurable heartbreak that I announce the passing of Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Lofaso, Jr., 66, who left this world on the morning of July 6, 2025, after a courageous battle with metastatic renal cancer. Bernie passed away peacefully, hand in hand with his beloved husband, Brandon, as he was lovingly comforted in his final moments—departing this life exactly as he lived it: with quiet strength, grace, and on his own terms.
Born on December 7, 1958, to Gloria Jarreau Lofaso and Bernard Joseph Lofaso, Sr., Bernie was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, alongside his younger siblings, Karen and Mark. A lifelong learner and accomplished academic, Bernie attended Central High School before he began his studies at Louisiana State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and a master’s degree in computer programming from The University of Texas at Austin, respectively. Bernie dedicated nearly 30 years of his career to UT Austin, where he was admired for his integrity, intellect, and tireless work ethic.
Bernie’s brilliance was matched by his boundless compassion. A man of deep principle and quiet generosity, he gave selflessly to those in need—both through financial support and countless hours of volunteer service. His charitable efforts included steadfast support for Austin Pets Alive!, Boys Town, The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and numerous other organizations that reflected his values of empathy, service, and dignity for all.
Outside of his professional and philanthropic life, Bernie was a man of discipline and introspection. He found joy in weightlifting, rowing, reading, computers, cycling, and helping others wherever and whenever he could. His days were often spent bettering himself and the world around him—whether that meant offering a helping hand, or curling up with a good book and a beloved cat nearby.
To those who knew him, Bernie was a quiet force—a man of unwavering dependability, sharp wit, gentle soul, and limitless heart. Reserved by nature, he was an inspiration and loyal presence who led by example and loved without condition.
Bernie shared 16 transformative years with his adoring husband, Brandon J. Brammer. Theirs was a once-in-a-lifetime bond—opposites in many ways, yet perfectly in sync where it mattered most. Bernie championed Brandon through education, sobriety, and entrepreneurship, always believing in him unconditionally. Their relationship was one of mutual growth, respect, and a deep and enduring love that defied explanation and never wavered.
Bernie is survived by his husband, Brandon J. Brammer of Nederland, TX; his father, Bernard Joseph Lofaso, Sr.; his sister, Karen Plachue, and her husband, Neil, all of Baton Rouge, LA; and his four beloved cats: Boston, Meowma, Link, and Louis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria, and his younger brother, Mark.
Bernie leaves behind a legacy of kindness, intellect, resilience, and quiet greatness. His impact will be felt for generations in the lives he touched, the causes he championed, and the love he gave so freely.
Though he has left this world, Bernie’s spirit lives on—in every life he made better, every moment he brightened, and in the endless love of those who will carry his memory forever and always.
