Bernice Peterman Caldwell went to the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 7, 1922 in Fredericksburg, Texas, one of five children to William and Louise Peterman. Her family moved to Austin when she was 14 years old. She attended Austin High School.
She joined Grace United Methodist Church as a teenager, where she met her life long companion of almost 70 years, Malcolm (Micky) Caldwell. They were married on June 1, 1943 at Grace United Methodist Church and became very active in the church as Methodist Youth Sponsors. Bernice was a loving member of Grace for the rest of her life, and a member of MWCA.
She was a lifetime member of the PTA, serving as President of various schools in south Austin for over 15 years.
Bernice devoted her life to her daughters and when they left the nest, she went to work for the State Comptroller. She retired after ten years, never missing a day of work.
We are thankful for the many years we had with her and for her gentle kindness, loving spirit, generosity, faith and sharp wit. Bernice will truly be missed by all who knew her, but she will always live and be cherished in our hearts.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Micky; her three daughters, Beverly Stokes, Sharon Howell, and Blanche Napoleon, and their loving husbands; her five grandchildren; her three great-grandchildren; and her two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her memory to either Grace United Methodist Church or to Alzheimer’s Research.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2011 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park. A reception will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 205 E. Monroe Street following services.
