Ward Berton Hutto, age 90, of Austin, passed away on August 18, 2014, following a short illness. He was born September 17, 1923 to Roberta and Will T. Hutto in Bertram, Texas. He was the youngest of three brothers that grew up on the family farm outside of Bertram.

Bert was a 1941 graduate of Bertram High School. His studies at the University of Texas were interrupted by World War II, where he served as a pilot in the Army Air Force in Europe. He was a fighter pilot and was shot down on his 50th mission. He spent the last six weeks of the war retreating on foot across Europe with the German army. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1947. He held various accounting and finance positions for companies in Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso until his retirement in 1988 when he and his wife, Bertha Nell, moved to Llano. In 2003, they decided to move to Austin to be closer to family.

Bert married his first wife, Joell Williams, in 1951 and had two daughters. Bert and Jo divorced in 1978 and in 1984 he reconnected with a former girlfriend from his hometown, Bertha Nell Daniels Brooks. They were married on February 9, 1985 in Rockport, Texas. Bert and Bertha Nell spent almost 20 years in Llano, where they became active in their church and made many friends playing dominoes and taking bus tours across the United States. Bert was an avid sportsman, playing several sports in high school, then playing golf and tennis and jogging most of his adult life. He also enjoyed his annual deep sea fishing trips with his San Antonio buddies.

Bertha Nell predeceased him in 2013. Bert is survived by his daughter Gay Greiter of Minneapolis and his daughter Jenny Baker and husband Charles of Austin. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Elizabeth Greiter, Christopher Greiter, Christina (James) Watkins and Christopher (Dayna) Baker, and five great-grandchildren, Devlin, Brandon, Aidan and Clara Watkins and Moyra Baker. Bert also leaves stepsons Danny Brooks of Corpus Christi, Texas and Jerry (Jill) Brooks of Bellaire, Texas, daughter-in-law, DeeDee Brooks, step-grandchildren Carrie Wilkins, Cory Brooks, Kendall Brooks, Austin Brooks and Cameron Brooks, and great-grandchildren Luke, Brady and Bennett Wilkins and Sydney Brooks.

A memorial service will be held on August 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home.

Gay Lyn, Jenny and entire Hutto family, please accept my deepest condolences on your great loss. I always held fond memories of the Hutto family when you lived in San Antonio and your mother was one of my most beloved teachers and influences. I remember every detail about the day you all moved away and inherited your "meesy mouse". Just know that one of your old school bus buddies remembers your wonderful family and sends wishes of peace and healing your way.
