

Berteil Kroeger, age 88, of Austin, passed away February 1, 2014. Berteil was born to Lottie and Roy Starling on December 31, 1925, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1944, she married Vernon B. Kroeger, who preceded her in death. Berteil was also preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Lott. She was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Berteil graduated from Harlingen Senior High School in 1942, and graduated from business school in 1944. Berteil was a meticulous secretary to numerous Austin businesses, but her most important and longest held position was as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great -grandmother.
Berteil’s family was the most important thing to her, and she never missed an opportunity to tell complete strangers about all of them. She organized many vacations for her Texas family to visit their Mississippi aunts, uncles, and cousins for family reunions. She was also an instrumental part of the Kroeger family reunion in Burnet, Texas.
Known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Gree Gree,” Berteil will be missed by all her family. Berteil is survived by her daughter Joyce Edwinson and son-in-law Jack Edwinson, and her daughter Deborah Cartwright. She is also survived by her three grandchildren and their spouses, and her eight great-grandchildren.
Formal visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home: 6100 North Lamar. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church: 209 West 27th Street. A short reception will follow the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
