Berti May Mechler, 92, of Austin passed away April 5, 2022. She was born May 23, 1929 in Champaign, Illinois. Her midwestern heritage informed her personality. She loved the land, the climate and its rich history. She never acclimatized to her Texas home, aching for 4 seasons of weather and some snow. Berti’s upbringing during the Great Depression influenced her greatly. She was very frugal and didn’t even own a credit card. She was steadfast and loyal, loving, unflappable and adamant (intractable, but not in a bad way). She worked hard after World War II making her way in the world, living in Illinois, Minnesota, California and eventually moving to Texas. Her love and aptitude for art gave her much fulfillment. She loved to sketch, paint and take photographs, producing many works of art. I wished we still had all of them.
Her boundless energy surprised everyone who met her. She put all of her children to shame with her quick gait and quicker wit. It was difficult to keep up with her. She worked hard to make a life for herself ensuring that her children were aided by her experience and wisdom. She will be greatly missed.
Berti is survived by her sons, Mike and Greg Mechler; her daughter, Kathryn Thompson and her husband Paul; grandchildren, Suzanne Mechler, Daniel Thompson, and Matthew Mechler. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Kelly Sosa for her love, guidance, and support.
