The last child of an early-20th Century Austin business family, he was a graduate of Austin High School and attended the University of Texas. He founded and operated the Shelby Printing Company from 1941 until 1991, developing a reputation for high-quality workmanship by assuring customers that their work was done correctly and professionally. He was active in and an officer of such printing trade organizations as the Southwest Mail Producers Guild, (of which he was president in 1969), and the Austin Litho Club. This quiet and gentle man devoted much of his free time in volunteer service with such organizations as the Founders Lions Club and Boy Scout Troop 410. He won recognition from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic for his more than 20 years as a volunteer reader, which he continued doing until his last days in Dallas. He also contributed to scores of charities over the years, and left instructions for some of his possessions to go to specific charities after his death. He and members of his immediate family were also members of St. Johns United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. Mr. Shelby survived his beloved wife Wanda, who died in 1997. He is survived by son Gilbert Shelby and his wife Cecilia Phillips and their daughter Adeline, of Dallas, and by daughter Kathy Shelby van den Burg, her husband Wilco and their daughters Shelby and Haley, of Trumbauersville, Pa. He was also an uncle to scores of nieces and nephews. The family asks that any memorial contributions be sent to B.G.
