Robert Earl (Bob) Cloud, Jr. was born in Austin, Texas, on June 24, 1927, at the old St. David's Hospital, the son of Robert Earl Cloud and Clara Amelia Luthy Cloud. He passed from this earth on Thursday, January 23, 2014, after a long battle with heart disease. Bob graduated from Austin High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. Following training in Chicago, Illinois, he went on the shakedown cruise of the U.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. After World War II, he attended the University of Texas before joining his father at the Austin American-Statesman as a stereotyper. When that technique was phased out in the early 1970s, he became a classified ad salesman, and retired from the newspaper in 1989 after 40 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia (Pat) Eppright and three children, daughter Candy Cloud (Sherry Lindley), son Andy Cloud (Mary Alvarado-Cloud), daughter Cindy Logan (Marshall), and three grandchildren—Matt Brown, Amanda Brown, and Daniel Logan. He is also survived by his sister Betty Cloud Laird, sister-in-law Ann Cloud, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Bob is predeceased by his parents, brother Bill, and nephew Rodney Cloud. After retirement, Bob and Pat enjoyed extensive domestic and foreign travel. They were season ticket holders for UT baseball games for 20 years and enjoyed tailgating with many friends. His baseball friends recently surprised Bob by placing a name paver for him on the Walk of Honor at the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, Texas. Bob and Pat took many “mission” trips to Shreveport, Louisiana and loved relaxing at their lake home on Lake LBJ where Bob loved to fish as all the men of his family had. Bob was a founding father of the Cloud Family Association honoring Cloud history—his great, great, great uncle, Daniel William Cloud, died defending the Alamo. He was a member of Koenig Lane Christian Church for 49 years, a board member for Hope Food Pantry, and was a current member of United Christian Church. He had many friends and was loved by all. They enjoyed telling “Bob Stories” about his many funny escapades. He had a great sense of humor that was appreciated by all. The family wants to thank the many doctors, nurses, and staff at the Heart Hospital, Central Texas Rehab Hospital, and Park Bend Health Center for the loving care provided Bob during the past four months. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made in Bob's name to United Christian Church, 3500 West Parmer Lane, Austin, Texas 78727 A Memorial Service will be conducted at Three o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 28th of January, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas with Rev. Dr. James Lewis officiating.
