Carol grew up in Brooklyn before attending the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland, where she met her future husband, Jerry.
Carol and Jerry lived throughout the US, including Buffalo, Binghampton, Texas, Virginia, and finally California. Carol worked as a first grade and special education teacher while raising her children, Nancy and Eric.
After Jerry’s passing, Carol moved to The Villages, Florida, near her sister Mary and brother-in-law Jack. Carol was an active member of the Villages community and an avid card player; any game, anytime, anywhere.
Throughout her life, Carol was devoted to her family, her students, and others. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend and will be remembered most for her kindness and interest in others.
Carol loved baking with her grandchildren. She was very patient, teaching them skills that would remain with them through life. Her specialties were banana bread with chocolate chips and cookies of all kinds, especially chocolate crinkles.
In later years, Carol was known for cataloging the birthdays of staff and friends alike at her retirement community and remembering them with a birthday card. She was known as the candy lady, passing out treats to everyone she saw.
She really enjoyed playing bingo, especially for cash!
Carol is survived by her children, Nancy and Eric; her son-in-law, Glenn; her grandchildren, Nick and Matt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Gerard (Jerry) Sauer; her second husband, Bill Conner; her sister, Mary Knierim; and brother-in-law, Jack Knierim.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Querencia Retirement Community for their love and care for Carol in her later years.
A private burial service will be held in California, where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Jerry.
In lieu of donations, Carol’s memory could be honored by spending some time, giving a call or sending a card to an elderly person who would so much appreciate it. These were Carol’s greatest pleasures in her latest years.
