Born on September 12, 1932, Carolyn grew up in Chickasha, Oklahoma where she lived with her parents Olen M Harned and Ruth Gough Harned and her older sister Helen. She graduated from Oklahoma College of Women with a degree in home economics. She went on to become an elementary school teacher and taught 3rd grade.
After college Carolyn met “Bing” Vincent T. Coffman in Oklahoma City, and after he graduated from the University of Kansas they wed in 1954 and moved to Houston, Texas. Bing started his Mechanical Engineering career with Brown & Root and Carolyn started teaching school at Sutton Elementary. While in Houston they started their family of three boys, Kelly Coffman of Houston, Texas, Barry Coffman of Austin, Texas and Tracy Coffman of Austin, Texas.
In 1963 Bing’s job took Carolyn and the boys from Houston, Texas to Madrid, Spain where they lived for five years. Carolyn taught school while there at Royal Oaks Elementary School, a part of the U.S. Torrejon Air Force Base. They returned to Texas and raised their boys in Baytown. Carolyn was a wonderful “boys’ mom” and was very active and supportive in all the boys endeavers, sports and otherwise, over their years at home. Years after Bing’s passing in June of 1980, Carolyn married ‘Don” James Donald Martin in Feb of 1985. Don passed away in June of 2012.
Carolyn was a treasure to all those that knew and loved her. She truly never met a stranger, always a smile on her face and a big generous, and sometimes spunky, spirit for all. Besides teaching, she loved to travel throughout her life and, more than anything, she loved spending time with friends and her family near and far.
Carolyn loved the Lord. It was this faith that persevered her through times of great personal loss. She was an inspiring example of resiliency and strength, never losing sight of her eternal reward. She will be greatly missed this side of heaven.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Carolyn was preceded in death by her sister Helen, and by her first son, Kelly V. Coffman of Houston, Texas.
She is survived by her son Kelly’s wife Sandy Sparkman Coffman; son Barry Coffman, and wife Susan Bean Coffman; son Tracy Coffman, and wife Colleen Cangelosi Coffman; seven grandchildren: Josh Coffman (fiance “BJ”), Megan Coffman (Collin Hoster), Sarah Swantner ( Daniel ), Rebecca Younger (Shawn), Blaine Coffman, Clay Coffman and Lyndie Coffman; and four great grandchildren Sutton and Charlie Swantner, and Hayes and Garrett Younger.
A Memorial Service will be held at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive Austin, Texas on February 22, 2025 at 1:00 PM. There will be a livestream available for those unable to attend.
