Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Catherine’s Scottish-Irish heritage shone in her delicate complexion, lively hazel eyes, golden red hair, love of poetry and whimsical turn of phrase.
Fearless as a child, she told stories of escapades climbing tall trees, scaling fences and ill-fated bike stunts like, standing on her saddle at full flight! She and her friends enjoyed life when roads were safe to ride, parks and pools were near-by and adventures beckoned every moment of the day.
Catherine graduated from Sunset High School in 1940 and married, Edward, her high school sweetheart on January 25, 1942. Cars, Trains and Ed’s engineering work took them to Texarkana, Minnesota and New Jersey; eventually returning to Desoto, Texas where she shared over 30 years of enduring friendships with neighbors and the families of Larry & Barbara Hughes and Odis & Karen McLean.
Gifted with phenomenal memory, Catherine was the family oral historian. Her favorite job was Librarian at SMU while Ed pursued a Mechanical Engineering Degree under the GI Bill. She possessed an exceptional vocabulary and passed her love of words, written and spoken, to her children. All her life, she was an avid reader, until she lost all sight at age 85 from the ravages of Diabetes.
Catherine was a blithe and delightful spirit who lived her faith with love, kindness, humor and generosity towards others. She was the embodiment of the adage, “Preach the gospel every day. If necessary, use words.” Her faith inspired her cheery optimism which supported her through losing pieces of her life that we take for granted like sight, walking and the ability to express herself verbally.
Catherine’s death ends her branch of the Malcomson tree as she was the only child of Joseph David Malcomson, also an only child, and Anne Gladys McBrair. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Ellis Carter and her grandson Zachary Evans Homrighaus. She is survived by four children, Emily Suzanne Carter, Megan Murphy, Lawrence Ellis Carter and Barbara Kaye Homrighaus; three grandchildren, Jason Scott Carter, Miranda Elayne Carter-Vahle, Ariel Caitlee Homrighaus; and two great-grandchildren, Collyn Dabhidh Vahle and Jenna Leann Carter.
The family would like to express our infinite gratitude for the 5 years of kind words, gentle touch and loving care she received at Monte Siesta Nursing and Rehab Center.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar.
