Catherine Ann [Fischer] Flahive passed from this life on the morning of February, 7, 2017. She was born into the German community of Central Texas on October 3, 1919; the oldest and yet last living child of Joseph Fischer and Julia Schutze Fischer of Austin. This German tenacity served her well through a good rich life of family and faith, and the challenges that come with both. An Alumnae of St. Mary’s Academy she was well grounded in the values that would accompany her throughout her life. In search for a Catholic husband amongst the collegiate “boys” who frequented the St. Austin Newman Club she charmed the heart of a young Irish Yankee, whose humor and good graces her father finally grew to appreciate, Terry “Ted” Flahive – who would make his mark in the field of Law, and in the memories of family and church. It has now been twenty two years since his death.
The rambunctious love they shared soon took form in the brood of young rascals they produced: Joe, during the height of war, Terry when peace was achieved, Michael when settling down was appearing, followed by Katie – the rose among the thorns – with a final gift of the twins Pete and Pat. It was about this time that Catherine Ann’s life focus became clear: children – in all forms and all stages. Following her own mother’s example, she loved to give to others and encouraged her children and grandchildren to do the same. Nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren now will remember her, with her joy, and great smile and wide embrace. She had a smile that woke up your day and a lady’s grace that invited you into an appreciation of the present situation.
Throughout this familial trek there certainly were challenges that could rock the most committed: ill-health, painful realities, loss and hopes dashed. But throughout it all her strength of will and determined expectations kept us all afloat and wondering what was next. She has left her mothering mark on us all – something we all will carry as both challenge and gift, in memory of her ever-present motherly love.
It’s not surprising her favorite points of support are connected to children: St. Austin Catholic School and St. Louise House. Her life and faith will be remembered with a viewing on Friday, February 10 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas with visitation at 5 and rosary at 6. Her faith-filled life will be celebrated with a Mass of Resurrection on Saturday, February 11, at St. Austin Catholic Church, 2010 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX 78705 at 10 a.m. followed by a reception in the parish hall.
