Born to Charles Stephen Burnside and Elisabeth Wood Burnside in Lufkin, Texas, on April 12, 1936, Charles grew up in Greenville, Texas, where he graduated from high school. He went on to earn his BA and MA, both with honors, from East Texas State University.
But for two years managing the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Representative Richard C. White, Charles devoted his entire career to public education, first as a high school teacher in Crane, Texas, next as an instructor at Central Texas College and Austin Community College, and finally as Executive Director of the Texas Community College Teachers Association in Austin, where he retired in 2001 after 28 years.
Even in retirement, Charles remained committed to education, spending almost 20 years supervising student teachers from the University of Texas UTeach program and almost 25 years substituting in Austin area middle and high schools.
Charles was even more committed to his family: He adored his wife, Sandra Kay Anderegg Burnside, and his almost 60 years of marriage to her were, in Charles's own words, his proudest achievement. Charles was a proud and loving and devoted father to daughter, Mary Elisabeth, and son, John Christian, and later a proud and loving and devoted father-in-law to John's wife, Lorissa. If anything rivaled Charles's pride in his marriage to Sandra, it was his pride in his grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace and Evan Christian, whose academic events, performances, and sports activities he rarely missed.
Outside of work, Charles was active in church throughout his life, most recently as a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Austin for the past 20 years.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, his older sister, Claire Burnside, and his parents-in-law, Dan and Mary Anderegg. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law, Charles is survived by his brother-in-law Rick Anderegg and wife, Linda, his sister-in-law, Terri Anderegg, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Charles's life on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas, with visitation and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Central Texas Food Bank, First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund (in memory of Charles Burnside), Hospice Austin, or a charity of your choice.
The family extends special thanks to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Texas Oncology and Hospice Austin for their compassionate care for and dedication to Charles.
