CHARLES ALDEN SARGENT, M.D., age 87, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on February 22nd, 2016 in the company of his loving wife and family. For the past twenty years, Charles has enjoyed his retirement in Austin with his wife, Peggy Duke-Sargent, and has been surrounded by many of his children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who had a great passion for learning and inspired this love in all of his children. He was a wonderful storyteller whose wry sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Charles was born on February 15th, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Harold Sargent and Edith Button. He was predeceased by his brother Douglas Sargent. He graduated from Cooley High School, Wayne State University and earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He met his first wife, Amalia Lucile Heaton (deceased,) at the University and thus began their forty three-year journey together. His medical practice took them from Detroit to Washington, D.C., where he served on a destroyer off the coast of Iceland for the Army Corp of Doctors in the US Public Health Service. They then moved to Houston where they remained for 35 years. Charles was a founding partner in 1966 of Texas Eye Institute of Houston and continued his practice there until 1998. He served as past President of the Houston Ophthalmology Society. Charles later moved with his wife Peggy to Austin where he worked at Texan Eye from 1998 to 2008. They enjoyed traveling, his grandkids and spending time with friends and attending church. One of Charles’ favorite pastimes was to take the family for weekend trips to his first wife Amalia’s family farm in Bellville, Texas, where they enjoyed bonfires, riding motorcycles and spending time together. Charles loved the outdoors, and was an avid runner. He also enjoyed reading books and playing the piano.
Charles is survived by his wife Peggy Duke-Sargent, and his seven children and their families: Julia Sargent, M.D., her husband Bruce Turner M.D., and their daughters, Audrey and Gillian Turner of Austin, TX; daughter Leah Sargent Rosas, her children Randall and Carolyn, of Austin, TX; son Mark Sargent, his wife, Lynn, and sons, Aric and Matthew of Katy, TX; daughter Laura Sargent of Austin, TX; daughter Amanda Honighausen, her husband Ulrich, their daughters Olivia, Alexis and Elena, of Santa Rosa, CA; daughter Kristin Sargent M.D., her husband Robert Marquis M.D., their children Michael, Emily and Sarah Marquis of Austin, TX; daughter Ellen Abernathy, her husband Charles, and sons, Eric and Brett, of Austin, TX.
