Christopher Weston Scales, the son of Obbie Lee Scales and Michele Darnice Scales, was born on July 18, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas. Chris' was delivered at Lackland Air Force Base. He was a healthy baby boy and remained healthy, active, and athletic until his unexpected and untimely death.
Christopher's parents met and married while both were in the military, which exposed him to extensive travel and relocations from an early age. From San Antonio, the family got orders to Yokota Air Base in Japan, where Chris attended pre-school. Upon return to the United States, he lived in Fort Worth, Texas, where he attended Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School. From Fort Worth, he moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he finished middle school before moving to Gulfport, Mississippi to live with his father Obbie and Step-mother Peggy. He attended Vicksburg High, then moved back to Wichita, Kansas to attend Wichita East High. The family relocated again to Kent, Washington, where he attended Thomas Jefferson High School. Through all the moving, Chris learned to perfect relationships fast. He made and kept close friends everywhere he went and everywhere he worked.
Being raised from the age of 7 years old, primarily by a single, working parent, Chris could barely wait to work outside the house. His first job was at Safeway Deli. He then became a cook at the Ice Center in Kent, leading to a twenty-year career in service and hospitality as a chef and bartender. His last place of employment was in the Culinary Department at The Thompson Austin Hotel (Hyatt), a rooftop restaurant called Arriba Abajo. He enjoyed the freedom of earning his own money, but more important to him were the relationships he had with friends and coworkers along the way.
Christopher, who also went by Wes, was very active. He was laser-focused on the goals he had for his life. He wanted to be fluent in Spanish, so he got a Duolingo account and insisted on William and me doing it with him. He wanted to be an actor, so he was taking acting classes. He had an amazing deep voice and did voiceovers for audiobooks. He wanted to be successful financially, so he worked two jobs and believed in financial responsibility. He was independent and took full responsibility for his adult life, never asking for a handout. He was somewhat of a health nut, at times running 10k's, and faithfully working out at Gold's Gym. He walked every day to get to and from work, the gym, and shopping. Friends say he was the healthiest person they knew. They commented on his choice of protein drinks, creatine shakes, and herbal teas. He had a chef's kitchen with homemade sauces, fermented foods, pasture-raised organic eggs, fish, and green vegetables. Some time ago, he got sober, cold turkey, and he inspired others in their sobriety. Finally, he wanted to marry a good woman and have a family. He stated he would like 10 children. I looked forward to being right by his side to granny/granny his children.
His last day at work was February 7, 2025. He was supposed to work February 11, 2025, but he did not show up. William, his brother, began to worry when he did not return calls or messages. On February 24th, William called for a well check from Chicago. Officers broke in and found him lying in bed as if he had laid down for a nap. He was in lounge wear, a tee-shirt, and a hair bonnet. The house was investigated thoroughly, and there was no sign of foul play.
Sunday, March 2nd, I got back to his house after meeting with his previous employer and coworkers at Lefty's bar, I found a book that had been delivered to the doorstep. It had been shipped on February 11th, which means it was probably purchased the 9th or 10th. The title of the journal: "THE SUCCESSFUL MAN: SELF DEVELOPMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY, PROGRESSION". This was no longer my little boy, he was a man on a mission and I could not be prouder of him.
Christopher leaves to cherish his memory, his Parents, Obbie Lee Scales of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Michele Darnice Scales of Chicago, Illinois, Step-mother Peggy Scales, two brothers, William Mitchell Scales, and Axel Joseph Scales, two sisters, Kamillah Lynn Scales, and Spicey Lynn Scales, both of Mississippi. He is preceded in death by all of his Grandparents: William Scales, Ora Lee Scales, Mitchell Veal, Sr. and Brenda Ann Veal, Brother Joel Emory Erving Clemons, and Furbaby, Prince Dooky Ellington Scales. He will be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, co-workers and friends.
