

CLARICE G. HOLLMAN NEAL Clarice Georgette Hollman Neal, age 83, passed away on May 8, 2004 at Hospice Austin Christopher House, Austin, Texas of a cerebral vascular accident. She was born in 1920 in Camarasa, Spain and was raised in Brazil where her father was a civil engineer. She would travel to Shiner, Texas with her parents where her maternal grandparents lived, traveling via steamer to New York and train to Texas. She graduated from São Paulo Graded School as valedictorian and entered The University of Texas at Austin in 1938 where she graduated in 1942 with a BA in Spanish sum cum laude. During World War II she worked for U.S. Censorship in San Antonio and Laredo. Clarice married Joe West Neal on October 10, 1943 in Shiner, Texas. In 1946, Clarice and Joe, a University of Texas professor, moved back to Austin after their War time service. She was active in the Pan American Round Table of Austin since 1947 and was Director in 1961-62. She was active in The University Ladies Club and worked for 25 years at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection Library at The University of Texas. Clarice developed an interest in Genealogy in 1970. Since then she accumulated information on both sides of her family from throughout the country as well as Europe. Her research culminated in the compilation of The Dales of Eastern Shore Maryland and Tennessee which was published in 1986 and co-compilation David Young and Sarah Phillips Descendants in 1995. Her survivors include husband, Dr. Joe W. Neal of Austin, TX; son, John Hollman Neal and wife, Linda Bebout Neal of Escondido, CA; son, Tom Louis Neal and wife, Candy Neal of Roseville, CA; son, Frank West Neal and wife, Jane Lester Neal of Burleson, TX; daughter Mary Jo Clarice Beckman and husband, Robert Beckman of Falls Church, VA; and 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Her Life at Horse Thief Hollow Ranch at a future date.
