

Cleta Mae Strickland (born Nov 3, 1922) died peacefully on Monday evening, January 4, 2016, at the age of 93. Mae, daughter of Jim and Ora Montague, was one eight children. She spent her early years in the Texas hill country communities of Mountain City, Henly, and Dripping Springs surrounded by her siblings and numerous cousins. At age 18 she moved to Austin where she met and Married Joe Wilburn Strickland.
Mrs. Strickland was a loving wife and mother and had a remarkable career in which she distinguished herself in retail sales and marketing as one of Austin's first cosmeticians. She was well known for her knowledge of skin care and very well known to multiple generations of customers of the Scarborough's and Yarning's department stores.
She was happily married to her husband for 50 years before he passed away in 1988.
She is survived by her son James Strickland, daughter-in-law Barbara Strickland, granddaughter, Stephanie Strickland Wakashige, grandson, Greg Strickland and grandchildren, Shaelyn Sherhus and Aisling Wakashige, her sisters Jean Ferris, Joyce Arnold, Ora Tucker and brother, Carroll Montague.
A funeral service for Mrs. Strickland will be at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar, at 10:00 AM Friday, Jan. 8, 2016.
