

Clyde W. Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of a United States Naval Officer and Mrs. Thomas William Smith. He was reared and attended schools in Virginia and Washington, D. C. Clyde graduated from George Washington University, George Washington School of Law and Southeastern University, all in Washington, D. C. He was a member of the Virginia Bar and a licensed Public Accountant in Texas. Clyde was in the Federal Bureau of Investigations as a Special Agent and was a Major in the United States Army, serving in the Pentagon and the European Theater during World War II. He received the Legion of Merit for his service. After moving to Austin in the 1950's, Clyde was involved in financial affairs. He was a Vice President and Trust Officer of City National Bank and was associated for many years with the firm of A. G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. before his retirement. He was an Allied Member of the New York Stock Exchange. He had a strong interest in education and was a Professor of Finance at Southeastern University in Washington, D. C. and a Lecturer of Business Law at the University of Texas and St. Edwards University in Austin. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, O.D.K., and a founder of Knebel Post # 83 American Legion in Austin. Clyde was married to the former Bonnie Patton of Crockett, Texas in Washington, D.C., where they met. Surviving are one son, Clyde W. Smith, Jr. (Rick) and his wife Natalie, one grandson, Ryan Smith of Houston, two granddaughters, Amie and Meghann and her husband Chris, and three great-grandchildren, Jarrid, Alyssa and Savannah of Austin. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 2nd at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2009 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
