Ted was born on October 8, 1937 in Homer, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana to William Felix Maddry and Maggie Camp Maddry.
Ted graduated from Homer High School and went on to attend Louisiana State University, he received a Bachelor’s degree from University of Tampa, and his Master’s degree from Auburn University. Ted was also a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College.
Ted enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958 and later attended and graduated the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. During his 31 years of service, Ted served in South Korea, Vietnam, France, Germany, Australia, Africa, and several stateside assignments. His career in the military allowed him to provide his wife and family the gift of travel, self-sufficiency, resiliency, and a greater world view.
Ted loved to read history, watch old westerns, work in his woodshop, and spend time working outdoors. On any given day, one could find Ted tending his vegetable garden, fruit trees, and bird feeders, or sitting on the porch watching the wildlife. Ted loved animals and provided a loving home to many lucky cats and dogs. He loved children and always had a popsicle, a small chore, or lively story to share.
Ted was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Linda Payne Maddry, his parents Felix and Maggie Maddry, his sister Gloria Nichols and his brother Buddy Maddry.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Maddry Lyons, his son, COL Scott “Drew” A. Maddry, his son-in-law, Michael S. Lyons and daughter-in-law, Julie Cavaco-Maddry, his grandson, Kyle Maddry, and his granddaughters, Brooke Lyons and Samantha Lyons. He leaves behind his beloved cats, Shadow and Oscar, who were his constant companions to the end.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff and caregivers of Brookdale Westlake and Hospice Austin.
