Dr. Dan Charles Montgomery

Dr. Dan Charles Montgomery, affectionately known as “Dr. Dan,” passed away peacefully at his home in Bee Cave, Texas, from natural causes. Born to Charles Montgomery and Anna Mae Jameson Montgomery, Dr. Dan spent his early years in Amarillo, Texas, and Las Vegas, New Mexico. He attended Robertson High School and later earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Dan dedicated more than 40 years to helping individuals, couples, families, and groups. He was a licensed psychologist in California and a licensed marriage and family therapist in Texas. Throughout his private practice, he provided approximately 40,000 hours of counseling and psychotherapy.

He also served as an independent-contractor psychologist for Marine aviators and their families at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, providing care to service members and spouses experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. From 1976 until 1986, Dr. Dan was a professor of counseling and psychotherapy at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Psychology.

A nationally known therapist and author, Dr. Dan, wrote 14 books, with editions available in 12 languages. His professional work and publications received endorsements from mental-health professionals affiliated with Yale, Princeton, Notre Dame, and Stanford School of Medicine. His book God and Your Personality received endorsements from cardinals representing six countries and from Pope Benedict XVI. Other books, including The Self Compass and Faith Beyond Church Walls, were endorsed by professors from Protestant and Catholic seminaries throughout North America.

Dr. Dan lived according to the principles of “Peace, Joy, and Love.” He believed deeply in helping others recognize their value and develop a stronger sense of self-worth. In addition to his professional work, he served as a minister and willingly counseled couples outside his private practice.

Dr. Dan was a fifth-degree black belt who loved dancing, football, flying, music of all kinds, and spending time with his cats. He was known for doing things his own way and for sharing his favorite words: “Peace, Joy, Love.”

He was a member of The Love Center Church under the leadership of Pastor Edward Reynolds and also attended Lakeway Church.

Dr. Dan leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Doris “Cheyenne” Montgomery; his daughter, Kim Rogers, and her husband, John, along with their three children; his stepdaughter, Miranda Lott, and her children, Quinton Johnson and Malachi Lott; his stepson, Shawn Coulter, and his children, Quincy Coulter and Kingston Coulter; his brother, Ted Montgomery; and many other relatives, friends, students, colleagues, and former clients.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Katie Montgomery; his parents, Charles Montgomery and Anna Mae Jameson Montgomery; his sister, Jeanette Montgomery Root; and his brother-in-law, Mel Root.

Dr. Dan’s legacy will live on through his family, his students, his clients, his ministry, and the many lives touched by his books and teachings. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, minister, educator, therapist, and author whose life reflected peace, joy, and love.
