Daniel Lee Wood, Dan to business associates and Danny to family, died February 3, 2023 of combined complications from multiple myeloma plus a surgery in 2019 that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
A lifelong central Texan, Dan was born in LaGrange, Texas August 20, 1944 to Doris McGill Wood and DL Wood. The family tradition was to have uncle Dr. Leslie Boelsche of LaGrange deliver babies although the Wood family lived in Killeen. Dan attended school in Killeen and graduated from Killeen High School where he was active in all phases of vocal music, managed the football team, and edited the school newspaper. All of these were to play a part in the varied careers he was to pursue as an adult.
Dan was a loyal Longhorn and graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Radio/Television/ Film. While there he continued his interest in music singing in Longhorn Singers and a select group known as Varsity Singers. One of his fondest memories was the USO tour Varsity Singers took to Iceland and Greenland. Another significant event of those years was marriage to his highschool sweetheart, Johnnie Eldridge Wood and the beginning of their family of two daughters, Laura Lee and Leslie Ann. Although he had several careers, all of which he enjoyed, nothing in his life was as important as that of being a father and the word “Daddy” brought a smile to his face through the last days of his life.
Among his various careers Dan held the position of Membership Director at the Texas Association of Nurserymen, Executive Assistant at the Florida Nursery Growers Association,Executive Director of the Texas Choral and Texas Orchestra Directors' Associations, and Business Manager of the Austin Symphonic Band. Through his association work he met Marilyn Good to whom he was married for the final 31 years of his life. Dan and Marilyn were business partners in GoodWood Associates publishing company and for several years published Leaf & Leisure, a statewide lawn and garden magazine, as well as specialized magazines for several associations.
Dan was active in First United Methodist Church (FUMC), singing in the sanctuary choir and a chapel quartet, as well as holding several administrative positions. He was one of the founders of Life in the City church, an FUMC contemporary service that became its own church in South Austin. He was also active in the Austin arts community singing in River City Pops, performing at Arts on Real theater, and serving on the music panel for the Austin Arts Commission.
Dan is survived by his wife Marilyn Good beloved daughters Laura Bundrant and Leslie Dippel, Sons -in-law David Dippel and Donald Bundrant, bonus sons Michael and Douglas Good, sister Rachel FitzSimons, niece and nephews Kay Janssen, Mark Kreidler, and Steve Kreidler, grandchildren Daniel and David Bundrant, Avery, Joseph, and Christopher Dippel, Kayla and Justin Good, and great grandchildren Aaden and Payton Bundrant, and Alana, Malea, Nevaeh and Noah Bundrant, and sister-in-law Shelly Wood. Dan was predeceased by parents DL and Doris Wood, wife Johnnie Wood and brother Donald Wood. In lieu of flowers suggested memorial gift recipients are First United Methodist Church Austin, Life in the City Church, or the foundation of Texas Choral Directors Association.
