Daniel M. Ziegler, Ph.D. passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the age of 78. He was born in Quinter, Kansas, July 6, 1927 to Anton T. and Clara W. Ziegler, the tenth of thirteen children. A resident of Austin, TX since 1961, he joined the University of Texas as an assistant professor of chemistry, rising quickly to the post of full professor in 1969. He graduated from Benedictine College with a BS in Chemistry in 1949 and earned his doctorate in Chemistry from Loyola University, Chicago in 1955. He also received an honorary doctorate from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He was the Roger J. Williams Centennial professor of biochemistry from 1990 through 1997 until his retirement when he became professor emeritus. He was an editor of the Journal of Biochemistry among other journals. He received the Bernard B. Brodie award from the American Society of Pharmacological Experimental Therapy in 1990 and the Alexander von Humboldt award of Germany in 1991. He conducted research and authored numerous articles in biochemistry. He is best known for his discovery of the Ziegler Enzyme, which is the first FMO. Though his scientific accomplishments were substantial and improved the quality of life throughout the world, his greatest joy was in sharing the life of his children and grandchildren. By example, he taught them the essential elements of humility, respect, honest, integrity, fidelity, and love. The greatest of these is the love he shared with his wife. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Alice, children Daniel, Paul and wife Peg, Mary Claire and husband Joe, James and wife Vangie, and Sonia Berry, who has become like a daughter, as well as eight grandchildren. He also is survived by his siblings, Blaise, Paul, Rose, Beata and Clara. As a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, he was an active participant in the St. Vincent de Paul society as well as organizing the folk choir. He also was a former member of the St. Louis Church school board and taught in the religious education program. Rosary will be said at Weed-Corely-Fish funeral home at 7pm, Sunday, Nov 13th and a funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, Nov 14th, at 10am at St. Louis Catholic Church. The honorary pallbearers will be members of the St. Pauls Holy Family Guild of which Dan and Mary Alice had been members for 40 years.
