Laney Cook, 66, passed away the morning of Friday February 5, 2016 peacefully in his home, surrounded by his beloved family. Born in San Angelo, Texas to parents Vernon Turner Cook and Lila D. Chalk, he grew up in Sonora, Texas developing his strong work ethic over many summers on the Frank Fish ranch. It was about this time when he found his passion for football. Skilled in a variety of sports in high school, he received the moniker "Mr. Bronco" which he treasured. He made lifelong friends playing in the North/South All-American high school game before receiving his scholarship to Baylor, where he also played baseball and ran track in addition to football. From Baylor he headed to Denver to play for the Broncos before a career ending injury his first season. He moved to Austin in the late 70's and began a legendary career in the food and beverage industry.
On a flawless Texas day, he met his beloved wife pitching horseshoes at the old Posse West on 24th and Rio Grande. After a whirlwind courtship, they married in the summer of 1982 to begin a true "happily ever after". He is predeceased by his father Vernon Cook, and his sister Alice Ruth Cook. He is survived by his wife, Bette Gould Cook and children William Delaney Cook, Alice Lucile Cook, and Erin Wynne McCorquodale; brother J.V. Cook and his children: Bryan Delaney Cook, Alice Amanda Cook, and her children Luke and Jeffrey; brother Jesso Cook and sister Christa Cook; brother-in-law John Gould and his children, Harrison and Clayton.
Laney's passions are, but not limited to, hunting, fishing, watching the smoke rise from his barbeque pit, cracking a cold Miller Lite, and creating adventures for his family. You didn't need to know him long before he made you feel part of his posse. He left you with wonderful memories of time spent with him. He was a mean domino player and the only serious moments were the last 2 minutes of the football game. This true Texas cowboy would light up a room and had never met a stranger. He was one of a kind.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Seton Hospital and to Hospice Austin for their commitment to Laney's care.
