He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Maudie Whitwell; his wife of 56 years, Willowease Whitwell; daughter, Audrey Powers; grandson, Christopher Whitwell; and sister, Helen Campbell.
Delbert is survived by his two daughters, Monett Fowler of Ingelside and Tammy Dittmar of Lockhart; sons, Michael Whitwell of Kyle, Robert Whitwell of Lockhart and Jon Whitwell of Chappell Hill. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Delbert served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic from 1950 to 1973. T-Sgt Whitwell was stationed in Vietnam while F-4 aircraft were engaged in combat in Korea. T-Sgt Whitwell returned to Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX and retired in 1973 with 23 years of service. He then went to Austin Community College and earned an Associate degree in HVAC. He used that education to continue work as a maintenance supervisor at the Austin Housing Authority, retiring after 20 years. He was a very dedicated and hardworking man with high values and work ethics. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Delbert loved spending time with his family and taking vacations to the mountains. He loved the farm and visiting his family in Tennessee, especially picking blueberries and muscadines. In his latter days he enjoyed watching the deer and cows in his yard.

Interment 3:00 pm on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Onion Creek Memorial Park Cemetery, 11610 Chapel Lane, Austin, Texas.
Currently, due to the substantial public risk, city and state government mandates that social gatherings of limited amounts may occur with strict social distancing protocol. Current COVID protocols for Travis County, guests must wear protective masks at all times while inside the funeral home facility and practice the recommended six foot social distancing.
